Narelle still disrupting Australia LNG as it weakens from tropical cyclone SYDNEY – The Narelle storm system continued disrupting production at two of Australia’s biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants on March 28 as the former tropical cyclone weakened in the country’s north-west. Narelle, which has crossed Queensland state and Northern Territory since making landfall as a category four tropical cyclone on March 20, hit Western Australia on March 26, affecting LNG plants run by Chevron and Woodside. The storm’s impact exacerbated a global supply crunch caused by the Iran war. Chevron Australia was working to restore production at its Gorgon and Wheatstone gas facilities following production outages due to Narelle, a spokesperson said. “Severe weather associated with the passing of tropical cyclone Narelle likely caused the interruptions to both Gorgon and Wheatstone operations,” the spokesperson said. “We will resume full production at both facilities once it is safe to do so.” Gorgon is Australia’s largest LNG export facility, producing 15.6 million metric tons a year with three processing trains, while Wheatstone has two trains producing 8.9 million tons. Woodside said a “production interruption due to the cyclone” continued at its Karratha gas plant, the onshore processing facility for the North West Shelf project, while production was uninterrupted at its Macedon...

Cyclone Narelle hammers WA towns as category 2 system tracks south, placing Geraldton under emergency warning Cyclone Narelle’s wrecking spree through three States and Territories is set to leave its final mark on WA on Saturday as towns and communities start to deal with the damage left in its ferocious wake. The cyclone cut a swath of destruction in the North West on Friday, severing power to thousands of properties, flooding homes, ripping roofs off buildings and tearing up trees. As it barrelled down the coast before cutting inland, it forced the North West Shelf offline, adding to disruptions at other LNG projects — in total, halting three-quarters of WA’s gas production and more than 8 per cent of the world’s output. With Queensland and the Northern Territory still cleaning up from Narelle’s destructive tour de force, Australia will finally say farewell — or good riddance — to the big blow as what is left of dissipated Narelle exits into the Southern Ocean, west of Esperance. The system ceased to be cyclone-strength on Friday night, but shaken towns and communities in the North West were in recovery mode and face costly clean-ups after copping the full force of Narelle’s fury. It was a severe category four tropical cyclone up until around midday when it calmed slightly...

Cyclone continues trail of destruction amid warnings for Mid West residents Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle is continuing to cut a destructive swathe through Western Australia's north-west even as it weakens, with authorities warning the extreme weather is not over yet. The system has already caused widespread damage in Exmouth, where residents took shelter overnight, and is now tracking inland towards the state's Midwest. Large parts of the Gascoyne and Midwest coast are currently under emergency warnings, and the Bureau of Meteorology [BOM] said it expected towns as far south as Denham to be severely impacted even as the cyclone's strength faded. It said very destructive wind gusts and heavy rainfall were expected, and there could also be a dangerous storm tide along an almost 800-kilometre stretch of coastline between Onslow and Denham. Power out, houses damaged The cyclone passed over the North West Cape at Exmouth earlier today, where residents reported roofs being torn off buildings and heavy rain, as wind gusts reached 250 kilometres an hour. Loading... Exmouth's main evacuation centre, where up to 40 people are believed to have taken shelter overnight, lost part of its roof, and the town has lost power and water. "Conditions in the town deteriorated on Thursday evening and there are still a few...

Early reports of widespread damage as Cyclone Narelle smashes WA's Pilbara Residents in coastal communities in parts of Western Australia's north are reporting widespread damage and flooding as severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle barrels along the Pilbara coast, heading south. The cyclone, which has now been downgraded from category four to category three, is passing across the North West Cape between the tourist hotspots of Exmouth and Coral Bay, packing wind gusts of up to 250 kilometres per hour. A cyclone emergency warning is current across a large swathe of the Pilbara coast, from south of Mardie and Onslow through to Coral Bay, and including the Barrow and Montebello Islands. People in the area have been urged to shelter indoors as the system moves south, with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) warning of an immediate threat to lives and homes. In the town of Exmouth, there are reports of widespread damage, including roofs being ripped off, while the main street on Onslow has reportedly been inundated. Exmouth Shire President Matthew Niikkula said roofs had been torn from houses. "Everyone in town's house would be at least flooded with water, if not heavily damaged," he said. Exmouth's evacuation centre, where up to 40 people are believed to have sheltered overnight,...

Cyclone hits Australian gas plants as global energy fears deepen You have reached your maximum number of saved items. Remove items from your saved list to add more. Save this article for later Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime. A powerful cyclone has forced production cuts across key Australian gas export plants, adding pressure to global energy markets already in short supply due to the war in the Middle East choking oil and gas flows. Workers have been evacuated from Chevron’s Wheatstone gas platform – 225 kilometres off the coast of Western Australia – and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production has halted while Tropical Cyclone Narelle sweeps the region. The storm’s reach had extended to Chevron’s huge Gorgon gas plant on nearby Barrow Island, forcing the shutdown of one of its three LNG-production units, the company said. Woodside Energy, the largest Australian LNG company, said on Friday it had demobilised its workforce from its North West Shelf offshore platforms that feed the Karratha Gas Plant, disrupting production. Together, the affected projects on WA’s resource-rich coast account for as much as 8 per cent of global supplies of LNG, natural gas that has been super-chilled until it turns into a liquid so it can be...

Cyclone Narelle is now larger and 'more severe' as it crosses the Western Australian coast Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle continues to amaze us with its long journey across northern Australia. This cyclone began life near the Solomon Islands on March 16, when moist air rose rapidly and created a low-pressure zone. Narelle crossed the Cape York Peninsula last Friday as an intense but compact category 4 system, and continued a steady westerly track across the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Today the cyclone crossed as a dangerous category 4 cyclone near Exmouth, in the far northwest of WA. So far, Narelle has travelled more than 5,700 kilometres since it formed as a system near the Solomons, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. It is relatively rare for an individual tropical cyclone to affect Queensland, the NT and WA. The last time was Severe Cyclone Ingrid in 2005 and Cyclone Steve in 2000. The final path of Narelle is likely to be very similar to Steve, with its final dissipation in the Great Australian Bight. A large and severe cyclone Narelle is a much more severe cyclone than Steve, however. The system is now twice the size it was when it reached far north Queensland a week ago...

Winds at Learmonth continued to increase, reaching 75 knots gusting to 104. Exmouth—more exposed & deeper in the cyclone—likely had stronger winds.
