Here he created 3 pieces in Alberta, Canada. The image below was done by him with chalk and charcoal only and incorporating the methane bubbles of #AbrahamLake

We saw all kinds of weather that day, as you can guess by the moody sky.

Tiny yellow flowers in the foreground on a rocky muddy lake bank. The turquoise lake has an almost symmetrical Rocky Mountain in the background with a little dusting of snow on the top.

A mountain sits in the evening sun as sunset starts. High stratospheric clouds are lit softly pink. The frozen lake in the foreground is full of white and opague filled bubbles creating amazing little patterns in the ice.
I hope frozen water counts for #WaterWednesday
An image from 2022 of the infamous Abraham Lake in #Alberta #Canada with its frozen methane bubbles trapped just below the surface.
The bubbles from my understanding are a result of organics buried in the lake [β¦]

A hand and pen sit by the blue cyanorypes for scale, small versions of the final prints. The lake side of bighorn Dam is shown on the left and the lake side spillway on the right. The water level is at least 25 ft higher than the last time I was there. Photos taken Oct 2024
Larger blue cyanotype prints on mitsumata paper sit out, freshly exposed. The first one is darker, and the left one is most recent and lighter. Over the next 24 hours they will darken more. Once ready I will cut them down to 15x20 inches and chincolle or glue them onto white backing sheets of Somerset paper.
The small versions this week came out well, so scaling up a bit. One paper had spots on it but oh well. From Oct at Bighorn Dam spillway. Downstream from all the glacier work, upstream from Edmonton.

Shot of Abraham Lake in the winter, at sunset. The lake is like glass, with bubbles frozen just below the surface in the foreground, and snow-capped mountains along the horizon line in the background.
One of my all-time favourite shots as a photographer, and definitely a #Stunday qualifier: my first ever trip to #AbrahamLake to see the ice bubbles. I've been several times since, but none of my other visits have ever been quite as breathtaking as it was on this day.

Snow covered Mitchener Mountain in front of a snow and ice covered lake.
Frozen bubbles in cloudy greenish ice with cracks running through. The haziness is numerous tiny air bubbles
Abraham Lake on Feb 12 2025
The ice on the lake at this time of year is cloudy and hazy, interesting but not good for frozen bubble photos. The thick ice slabs are tilting and dropping from the low water level (hydro power production at the big horn dam).

Abraham Lake in the Canadian Rockies during winter is worth the effort to visit and photograph. It is a wonderland of landscapes, shapes, textures and just wonder at the natural marvels all around. #landscapephotography #winterphotography #abrahamlake #ice
The Canadian Rocky Mountains in September. A tree lined gravel road curves away in the foreground. There is a cloudy rocky mountain top with tree covered lower slopes in dappled light and some leaves with fall colours.
Abraham Mountain Alberta Canada.
The sun was starting break through and lift the clouds. The lake is a reservoir and there are some rustic campgrounds (toilets only) along the shore. Preacher's Point is a bigger one.

Did you know thereβs a lake in Alberta that freezes with methane bubbles under the surface? And that you can skate on it?? In case you need a vacation from the insanity down south, thereβs slightly less here. North and east of Banff. #AbrahamLake #AurumLodge
Wind blown granular snow pushed into waves and ridges on the ground in front of a small fir tree.
Windy Point by Abraham Lake, Alberta.
The wind blasts down the North Saskatchewan River valley most days and will keep the snow off the lake until sleet and snow hits it on a calm day. It's a great place for frozen bubble photos.

A favorite of mine. #AbrahamLake near Rocky Mountain House, Canada.
This is a photo of a frozen lake in the Canadian Rocky mountains. Layers of white frozen bubbles are trapped in dark blue ice. Some of the bubble shapes are round and flat, many are elongated random shapes. There is a crack in the ice running from top to bottom in the image.
A closeup of the frozen bubbles in Abraham Lake. This was Dec 8. There was shallower water where the river flows in, close to Mount Michener. The deeper part of the lake was open water. I was a little early but here the ice was 5 to 6 inches thick.

This is a bright snow and ice covered lake in the Rocky Mountains. The ice is clear in the foreground with many trapped bubbles. The bubbles are in layers, freezing before they hit the surface. The snow surrounding the ice is compressed and tangled and icy.
Abraham Lake from December 2 years ago. It can be a tough drive from Edmonton. I was there for a couple of days and this is my best image. It took a while to explore and find clear ice, decent light. The wind was brutal the first day.
