Problems with publishing in peer-reviewed journals include

slow and expensive processes, inconsistent and biased reviews, lack of reviewer compensation, and the risk of unethical practices like fraud and predatory publishing. The system is also challenged by reviewer fatigue and the pressure to "publish or perish," which can lower quality and hinder scientific progress.

Process and costs

Time: The peer review process can be very slow, often taking more than a year to publish a paper, which can delay research and impact career advancement.

Cost: Many journals charge high article processing charges (APCs), which can be prohibitive for researchers, especially those without adequate funding.

Inefficiency: The reliance on free, voluntary labor from reviewers and editors while the industry generates high profits is an unsustainable and inequitable financial model.

Reviewer and quality issues

Reviewer Fatigue: A shortage of willing and available reviewers, partly due to burnout, leads to delays and forces editors to seek reviewers with less specific expertise.

Bias: Peer review can be inconsistent and subjective, with evidence of bias against certain groups of authors or even against specific topics.
Abuse and fraud: The system is vulnerable to abuse by competitors who submit harsh reviews to block a rival's work or by those who steal ideas. The rise of paper mills and AI-generated fraud also poses a significant threat.

Inconsistent quality: The quality of peer review can be inconsistent, as many reviewers are not adequately compensated or trained for the task.

Systemic and cultural problems

"Publish or Perish": The pressure for academics to publish frequently can lead to an overabundance of low-quality papers and a disincentive to focus on declining research areas.

Impact Factor bias: The use of journal impact factor as a proxy for individual article quality can create a skewed view of research and influence biased review selection.

Predatory Journals: The proliferation of predatory journals that lack transparency and a proper review process adds to the problem, making it difficult to distinguish credible work from fake articles.

As you correctly note, there can be good reasons to avoid the route of submitting papers to #PeerReviewed #AcademicJournals even for #academics, but there are additional reasons for non-academics.

Another paper is with #MethodsInPsychology at #Elsevier submitted in the middle for February.

6 1/2 month later and it doesn't even have a second #reviewer yet.

I am an advocate of #SlowScience but that is not what I meant by it :(
