More than 14,000 Acadians lived in North America when the British expelled them. More than 11,000 were deported, of whom 5,000 died of disease, starvation or shipwrecks. Well less than 3,000 survived in Acadia (2600 in the 1764 census). Our ancestors settled in L'Acadie, Quebec.
