Width: consider the width of connecting paths, level of use, location and whether it will be one or two-way. A min clear width of 200cm will allow for two-way traffic with no need for passing places.
Boards must be laid at right angles to the direction of travel, otherwise, wheels or mobility canes may become caught between them.
To permit drainage, lay the deck with gaps between the individual boards. The gap between boards should not be greater than 12mm.
Boardwalks should have edging at a minimum of 75mm high that acts as an important wheel stop for wheelchairs and pushchairs, and an indicator for blind and partially sighted people.
Boardwalks and bridges can connect us to nature, but poor design can turn them into barriers. Slippery surfaces, uneven boards, or steep inclines hinder access. Thoughtful design and maintenance ensure safe, inclusive outdoor experiences. 🌿💚
