Pic of Xiao Zhan as Gu Yiye on the set of Ace Troops
Translation:
[Xiao Zhan | From Gu Yiye to Zang Hai — He's Always Pushing Boundaries
When filming Ace Troops, Xiao Zhan underwent military training in advance to prepare for the role of Gu Yiye. He crawled through the mud without a single complaint. That was the first time I saw “traffic star” in a different light — I didn’t expect him to be so dedicated.
Once, during a break on set, I quietly walked up to him to check the lighting. I raised my camera, and the moment I did, he flashed me a thumbs-up. I clicked the shutter (haha, I was a bit stunned myself). That kind of interaction really helps us staff members feel more connected, which in turn makes it easier to plan and shoot. Without that rapport, things would likely be much harder. But since that was years ago, I only have one photo from that moment left on my phone — I’ll try to dig it out later. (os: Bet you all haven’t seen that one, right?)
Now in The Legend of Zang Hai, his character Zang Hai has a chilling gaze and a subtle tremor in his muscles — a single expression sends a shiver down your spine. In episode 7, there’s a close-up with no dialogue, and yet you can see shock, rage, and determination all conveyed through his eyes.
Some say he's “overworking,” but I see it as commitment. I heard he once shot an underwater scene 20 times for another drama, and even filmed an entire day in a swamp with maggots. How many actors can do that? I think someone like him deserves recognition!]
