Opposing LTNs doesn't make you a 'culture war' petrol-head. Just look at what happened in Lambeth | Joseph Harker For five years residents have complained about traffic being pushed on to other roads. Finally they’re being listened to, says Joseph Harker, the Guardian’s senior editor, diversity and development

Maybe Mr Harker could tell us all when the consultation took place on turning our public space over to unregulated car use, and our residential streets to rat-running commuters?

This article is full of poorly researched anti #ActiveNeighbourhood bingo and the Guardian should know better.

Caught the end of the BBC News talking about Oxford’s #ActiveNeighbourhood schemes and the #LocalElection. Was it in any way balanced? @cycloxoxford.bsky.social?

Monthly bin collections and library closures: furious Bristol residents turn on Greens over council cuts Guerrilla protest against low-traffic neighbourhood is latest backlash against newly-elected council

Here we have a good example - it’s a pity the #ActiveNeighbourhood scheme seems to be the lightning rod for this, but a) I’d expect an area with high poverty to have low car ownership, and b) the things the protestors are asking for aren’t really in the LA’s gift

I think they’re probably wrong.

There’s no evidence that carrot and no stick has ever changed driving habits, and tbh the roll-out of the #BeeActive network is both not fast enough and crippled by the failure of nearly all the TfGM-led #ActiveNeighbourhood schemes.

Which is another issue - I’ve referenced the TfGM funded #ActiveNeighbourhood schemes, I think 3/10 got to implementation and of those none completed the trial (is that right @owlernook.bsky.social?). Bad consultation/implementation wastes money that could be used elsewhere.

AIUI the issue is that you need a good six months for traffic pattern changes to bed in after modal filters have been installed, and a lot of #ActiveNeighbourhood trials weren’t given that long.

This is the worry with the current DfT stance - “we’ll support you if you do this” isn’t the same as “you should do this” & given the backlash to eg. TfGM funded #ActiveNeighbourhood schemes I think a lot of local politicians lack the will to act in the face of screaming on FB @walkridegm.org.uk

Of course Milkstone/Deeplish is where the failed #ActiveNeighbourhood trial was and should be the answer *but* Oldham Rd is a fairly straight run off the canal and M&D is a bit of a maze.

The person who might have a better idea is Muddydwarf off the other place now I think about it. I’ll ask him.

Also TfGM facilitated 10 #ActiveNeighbourhood schemes, many of which were abandoned in the planning stages, and the (I think) 2 that made it to trial were abandoned.

Burnham’s focus is currently much more on buses than #ActiveTravel - a coherent bus network will be great but we really need both.
