Lovely thread celebrating the 5th anniversary of a #LowTrafficNeighbourhood, pointing out its benefits to road safety and independence of young people. When will a Greater Manchester council follow Oxford’s lead? @cycloxoxford.bsky.social @walkridegm.org.uk
The sad thing between that and the Rochdale #LowTrafficNeighbourhood is that, in GM, LTNs are now firmly in the 'too difficult' box.
There’s a decent amount of anecdata that it’s a poor choice of wedge issue though, because people don’t care enough.
@samsterby.com will correct me here but locally a council pulled a #LowTrafficNeighbourhood trial out & the pro-filter candidate was the only one to increase vote share next LE.

It’s all the more disappointing that the TfGM-funded #LowTrafficNeighbourhood schemes largely failed, after opposition (sometimes including antisocial behaviour) from a shouty minority @walkridegm.org.uk
Fantastic Appeal Court win for @saveoursaferstreets.org, who have averted the threat to remove popular and effective #LowTrafficNeighbourhood schemes in Tower Hamlets (E London).
So much better to look at, live in & move around on foot/by bike.
Film doesn't include how local with cars were persuaded to accept this?
How deliveries, emergencies, disabled have been factored in?
I note it was referred to as a #HealthyNeighbourhood ✅
instead of #LowTrafficNeighbourhood
It’s really hard to see how a quadrupling of cycling as a modal share in GM is going to happen by 2040 given all of this, especially as #LowTrafficNeighbourhood schemes have been abandoned as too difficult across the ten boroughs.
It’s pretty common for people to misinterpret the public mood (I think from reading the Mail/facebook comments)
Another example “I like this #LowTrafficNeighbourhood but the majority doesn’t” which is not the evidence.
It’s unfortunate that many #LowTrafficNeighbourhood schemes in Greater Manchester were watered down or abandoned.
We call on @rochdalecouncil.bsky.social to revisit the #MilkstoneAndDeeplish scheme, with the health, air quality and road safety benefits this would bring.
#LambethCouncil has to remove its #LowTrafficNeighbourhood with immediate effect and was ruled as 'unlawful'
Installed despite nobody wanting them .. #PowerToThePeople .. & not the authoritarian few 🤷♂️

A group of kids (in the middle distance) - mostly on bikes, one with a ball - are nonchalantly gathered in the middle of a street bathed in sunlight. In the foreground, two bikes, one orange on its side, one green upturned on its saddle/bars, have been left in the carriageway.
Nice to see the kids playing in the street and enjoying Trafford's annual LTN day (aka Manchester Marathon road closures).
#LowTrafficNeighbourhood #OneDayOnly
Traffic control in Victorian Fratton (Portsmouth, UK). No complaints here about a #LTN #lowtrafficneighbourhood that works excellently. It's been in place for probably 30 years or more.
It’s a real shame that antisocial behaviour from an entitled few stymied the #MilkstoneAndDeeplish #LowTrafficNeighbourhood trial @walkridegm.org.uk
Think this needs @samsterby.com’s #LowTrafficNeighbourhood bingo card?
Cycled through a #LowTrafficNeighbourhood in @Rochdalecouncil.bsky.social today.
Milkstone and Deeplish? No, the one round Spotland Primary and St Edmund’s church - which has modal filters and traffic restrictions like any other LTN, only they are years old.
@walkridegm.org.uk
Wide mouth across two roads with 12 planters forming a modal filter.
