"Isn't she lovely, this Hollywood girl?" Ada plucked off her heels and set them by the door on her way in. The apartment smelled like dinner was almost ready. "And they say, "she's so lucky, she's a star" But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart, thinking." The music blared from the kitchen. She couldn't help the smile that crept over her face when she turned the corner to find Leon swaying to the beat of the song over a pan on the stove. "If there's nothing missing in my life. Then why do these tears come at night?" Britney sang over Leon's phone on the kitchen counter. Ada slid her arms around his waist and kissed his shoulder. He jumped at the touch but soon relaxed into her arms.
"I thought you'd appreciate the music," he said. She could hear the smile on his face. She hummed onto his shoulder, and he set down the spatula to turn in her arms. Leon tucked one arm around her waist and took her hand to slowly dance with her. Ada leaned her head against his chest as he danced them around the kitchen. Her body relaxed into it and the fatigue set in from their long day. He kissed the top of her head as they moved. "Sounds like you enjoy Britney Spears too," she said softly against his chest. "I do because you do." "Very smooth, handsome." Ada pulled away to reach up and cup his face
between her hands. "This one your favorite?" She asked about the song. "You're my favorite." He leaned in to kiss her senselessly in the kitchen.

Ada never expected to find Leon here. But with the same enemy, they were bound to meet. She'd startled when he crawled right into her hiding spot. At first, she hadn't heard him over the music she had playing in her earbuds. "Ada?" His eyes narrowed. "What are you doing here?" She held a finger up to her lips. "Waiting." She'd taken refuge in one of the bigger facility vents and watched through the slatted vent cover into her target's lab. He'd be there any minute. "Wait. It was you." Leon squeezed in behind her and peered over her and out of the vent at the empty room below. "You set up that trap."
"Right." It wasn't her best work, but it would get her target into the lab. "Who are you working for?" he asked. So much for being quiet. Leon slouched awkwardly in the vent and shrugged when she gave no reply. "Had to ask." Ada pulled out her SAT phone and pulled up the map her employer had sent. Leon leaned in. "Where did you get that?" "That's classified." Ada couldn't hold back her grin, and Leon returned it. She held out her hand. "Give me your comm." He handed it to her without anymore questions. She found his comm number and sent him a copy of the map. He took it from her when she handed it over and
scrolled over the layout. "Thanks," he said. The comm screen lit his face in a dim green. They sat in silence while she waited. Ada adjusted her bluetooth earbud as the next song began to play. She often listened to music while she waited in between missions, or while waiting for her targets. The little bud beeped a couple times with low battery. Before she was able to do anything about it, the earbuds died. Instead of turning off her music, it blasted out of her speakers. "I'm addicted to you. Don't you know that you're toxic?" Her phone sang. She quickly silenced it, but the damage was already done.
Leon looked up from his comm and stared down at the phone in her hands. They stayed like that for a long time before he laughed. He attempted to hold it in with a hand over his mouth. Ada kicked herself for not charging her headphones before she left. "A Britney Spears fan?" he asked. Ada wanted to scold him, but she couldn't find it in her while his face shown with genuine delight. His laughter stopped when hers started. She hadn't laughed in so long that she barely remembered the feeling. The vent cover ripped off and a mutated version of their target reached in with a long tenticle and took Ada's leg. Leon

"Sometimes, I don't feel real." Leon leaned back in the worn brown couch. His hand choked the neck of the bottle of wine they'd been sharing and balanced it on his knee. His eyes had grown distant, lost somewhere she couldn't be. Ada reached out to gently extract the bottle from his grasp. The contents were mostly depleted anyway. He blinked away whatever thought plagued him when she took it. "You look real to me," she said and tipped back the bottle to her lips. "You know what I mean," he said. In his intoxicated state the words ran together in a cute way. But it was telling that his conviction seeped through. His brows drew together and he sank deeper into the
seat. The sad truth was that she did know what he meant. Real people didn't do what they did. The two of them hid the truth from the world in the dark with the monsters. She'd been at it so long that she'd forgotten what the light felt like. Leon, on the other hand, was so close he could touch the warm rays of sun but never walk into it. She wondered which was worse. To never know what it is to be free of monsters, or to have peace only for it to be taken away. The thought made her head hurt, or maybe that was the wine. Ada leaned over the settee and picked up another wine bottle from the abandoned
crate. The dust whipped into the air and made her sneeze. "Bless you," Leon said and reached out his hand for the wine. "Thanks. I got this one." She fumbled the corkscrew and worked to open the bottle. It proved harder with every bottle they finished. The cork came out with a loud pop and she held it to allow the contents to breathe. They sat in silence with empty heads and warm chests filled with libations. She eyed their holsters and weapons that they'd taken off in a truce, a gentle reprieve after a long mission. "I'm tired," she said. She was tired in the way an old dog was tired, and in Leon's
soft laugh she heard it too. "I've been saying that for years." He reached for the bottle and she pulled it away. "Not yet," she said. He fixed his eyes on her as if willing her to give it to him anyway. When she didn't, Leon attempted to stand but merely slid down the seat and onto the floor in front of the couch. Ada laughed from the fumble. Once she started she couldn't stop. Leon's shocked face kept her laughing. She held her stomach and leaned forward in a fit. He sat silent and still on the dusty floor as she calmed. "Leon, where is your shirt?" She attempted to contain her amusement but felt it slip

"You're not as slick as you think you are," Leon said. Ada lowered her grapple gun. Curiosity clutched her enough to stick around. "What is that supposed to mean?" "You think I don't notice? All those times luck just happen to fall into my lap?" "You're a lucky guy." "Sure. It's not like someone helped me at all." "I don't know what you're talking about." "You, Ada. You help me all the time. I can't prove it, and at this point it doesn't matter." Leon stepped closer to her. She made it a point to not step back, to not back down.
They'd argued enough tonight. Pointed guns at each other with no intention of pulling the trigger. "It doesn't," she agreed. "Why bring it up?" "Because it doesn't add up. What is this? You go around causing havoc for the rest of the world but for some reason you help me." "So you can repay me later." It was the only thing she could think to say. She hadn't expected this conversation. He was smarter than others knew, but even she had underestimated him. "I don't buy it. You don't do anything outside of your own interest, and you could easily walk away from me yet you don't."
"I don't think I have the answers you think I have." "I think that's the most honest thing you've ever said to me." Leon's shoulders relaxed and he holstered his gun. He turned to the door. "Why do you do it then?" she asked. He shifted and quietly mulled over her words. She saw them turn in his eyes as he stared at a spot on the wall. "You're always pinning the whole world on your shoulders. I don't know if you have a selfish bone in your body," she continued. "Maybe that's why then," he said. "What?"
"I can be selfish with you." He turned the handle and went through the door. Ada stood with her pulse pounding in her throat. She wanted to punch him. She wanted to call him back. "I can be selfless with you," she whispered in his absence.

The assignment was easy. A classmate volunteers to pose for everyone, and the rest draw them. They rotated out who took the role of model on the next live drawing day. But today felt different. Leon didn't necessarily choose the class to be an artist. His advisor recommended it for an extracurricular. But he found he enjoyed the quiet time. It wasn't until this semester that he ever thought of a problem with it. She'd walked in dripping in confidence and a cute little red number, before ducking out to change, and he was lost. Today was the day. Ada Wong had volunteered to be the model for this assignment. She'd even said she'd be fine with posing nude. This, in turn, was where
his anxiety began. "Alright, everyone." The instructor set a stool in the center of the room. The rest of the students sat in a semi circle around it with easels at the ready. "You all know the drill. Miss Wong will pose for 25 minutes. Don't get in your head about it. Think about negative space for this one," the instructor said. Ada walked back through the classroom door in a little white robe and slid onto the short stool. "After that we will do some rapid fire poses for figure sketches. Alright, any questions?" The class went silent. The students picked up their pencils in preparation for the pose. "Then let's begin. Miss Wong?"
Ada nodded and stood to disrobe and stand before the class in a simple pose. The instructor gave her a fake apple to hold and started the timer. It took Leon a minute to start. He became painfully aware of his attention and quickly averted his eyes to his pad of sketch paper. He couldn't mess this up. He took a breath and focused on the task at hand. One thing Leon knew about himself, he could zone in on a task that held this much interest to him. The only time his focus broke was when he looked up at the right time to find her eyes on him. He felt his face heat and quickly peered back at his paper. When he looked up again, he noticed a light pink over her own cheeks. Or maybe he
imagined it. "OK, time's up!" The instructor called at the end of the timer. Ada pulled the robe on and handed back the apple. The time felt too short for 25 minutes to Leon. "Let's go through them and see what we can learn." The professor pulled out a piece of paper and glanced around the room. "Mr. Kennedy? Let's start with you," they said. He tentatively turned his easel. A subtle smirk played over Ada's face. "Yes! This is what we were aiming for!" The professor was delighted with his work. They gave a few small critiques for him and a other students did the same. "Alright, let's move on to the next." They went around the room with similar
