A color photograph taken from a small plane low over Century City in West Los Angeles just after sunset. The view is from the west looking east and down at the twin Century Plaza Towers. The twin towers, with window lights only slightly outshining the ambient light, each have a distinctive equilateral triangular footprint, positioned point-to-point with each other, and distinguished by their vertical black-and-gray elements. Designed by Minoru Yamasaki, and built in 1975, the building is 44 stories tall. Surrounded by many office buildings and high rises of less stature and flanked by Santa Monica Blvd on the left and Olympic Blvd on the right.

With a slight dip of the wing the beautiful Century Plaza Towers appear.

Photograph taken from a small plane low over downtown Los Angeles at dusk. The view is looking Westwardly towards the hazy remains of the setting sun after it has dipped into the Pacific Ocean 15 miles away. The topography is endlessly flat except for the Palos Verdes Peninsula that rises above the expanse of the twinkling lights of humanity 22 miles to the Southwest. In the foreground are the skyscraper buildings of the iconic Los Angeles skyline. Each building with hundreds of lighted office windows, surrounded by roadways snaking westerly between the buildings and pockmarked by evenly spaced blue-green streetlights.

I shot this series in the late 80’s from a small plane over downtown LA. Slow speed film at dusk, combined with engine vibrations and pushing the film +2 stops rendered the photos grainy and unsharp.

(ATC granted clearance to fly this close to the city)
