Namibia takes third at COSANA tournament Erasmus Shalihaxwe Namibia secured third place at the Confederation of Southern Africa Netball Association (COSANA) tournament held in Windhoek over the past week. Despite having several local teams in the competition and the home advantage, only the Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) advanced past the group stages.  NCS claimed third place on Monday after beating Botswana Defence Force 41-27. NCS coach Salomon Tuaire said the tournament served as a learning experience for his team and will help them prepare for future matches. “I think in Namibia we have a relaxed approach to playing netball as opposed to other African countries. They are very physical, and it is something we need to work on. So from now on, we will give much attention to our physicality as well,” he said. Tuaire added that while his team had hoped to win the tournament, they still gained valuable insights. “We used this as a preparation for the upcoming league games. We now know where to improve and where our strengths are and use it to our advantage in the league games,” he said. COSANA president Letitia Chipandu, who observed the tournament from the start, said she was pleased with how teams performed. “We are thrilled with the quality of play that we have been watching. There has been growth in COSANA with regard to the development of netball. We are also happy that we had umpires from different countries who have been using this tournament to improve their umpiring skills and prepare for the Region 5 Games that will be taking place in July here in Namibia,” she said. Royal Flames Netball Club from Eswatini won the tournament, narrowly defeating Zimbabwe Defence Force 47-46 in the final on Monday.

Drogba headed to Namibia for Region 5 Games  African football legend Didier Drogba is expected to grace the upcoming African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia. The 11th edition of the multi-sport event is scheduled to run from 4 to 13 July across Windhoek and Swakopmund. AUSC Region 5 Games chief executive officer Stanley Mutota says Drogba has been invited in his capacity as Special Olympics global ambassador, given that this year’s event aims to promote disability sport. Drogba’s involvement in the competition will include taking part in an exhibition match and opening ceremony. “We need global ambassadors to help drive this message, and God willing, Didier Drogba will be here,” Mutota said during the ‘Making Noise Namibia’ campaign workshop held in Windhoek on Monday. “He is one of our great footballers and the African ambassador for Special Olympics. We will play a unified football match at the opening ceremony to make a statement about the need for an inclusive society that embraces everyone and provides opportunities for all,” Mutota says. He says support for disability sport must stem not just from an intentional standpoint, but should also be reflected in action and resourcing. “Our budgeting, infrastructure, and policymaking must align accordingly. This is when we must challenge ourselves to change, to share stories that transform lives, and ensure our people can think anew and provide better opportunities,” he says. The Special Olympics and Drogba are working together to promote the development of Special Olympics programmes that strive towards creating continuous opportunities and empowerment for people with intellectual disabilities, leading to a more inclusive society for all. Drogba has supported the Special Olympics since the 2012 Africa Regional Games, especially within his home country, Ivory Coast. The former Elephants captain is Ivory Coast’s all-time leader in goals scored in international matches and was twice named the African Footballer of the Year (in 2006 and 2009). He is best-known for his exploits at English Premiership side Chelsea where he won the Uefa Champions League, four English Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups across two spells. Drogba was last in Namibia in 2013m when he was named Windhoek Lager ambassador. – Nampa The post Drogba headed to Namibia for Region 5 Games  appeared first on The Namibian.

CoW gears up for AUSC Region 5 Youth Games Erasmus Shalihaxwe The City of Windhoek (CoW) is preparing to host the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in July 2025, with organisers ensuring that all stadiums and training venues will be ready in time for the event. Ndeulipulua Hamutumwa, Chairperson of the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games Organising Committee, said on Wednesday that Namibia is on track with preparations to welcome more than 2,500 athletes and officials from 10 countries. The games will take place from 4 to 13 July 2025. Participating countries include Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Athletes will compete in 13 sporting disciplines, including athletics, basketball, boxing, e-sports, football, judo, karate, netball, Special Olympics, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. Hamutumwa acknowledged the challenges that come with hosting a multi-sport event within a limited preparation period but said significant progress has been made. “Our facility renovations are well underway, as we are ensuring that each venue meets the highest international standards. From stadiums to training facilities, our teams are working tirelessly to complete the necessary upgrades. I want to assure you that all key venues will be ready to welcome athletes and spectators when the Games begin,” he said. He added that clear timelines have been set for the completion of renovations, with inspections scheduled before the opening ceremony. “I am pleased to confirm that the University of Namibia will serve as the Games Village, providing a safe and comfortable environment for all participating teams. Despite the date change, our organising team has efficiently managed the adjustments to ensure that all arrangements remain on track. Security remains a top priority, and we will be working closely with law enforcement agencies to create a safe and well-coordinated environment for athletes, officials, and spectators,” Hamutumwa said.
