Namibia to host ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifier Erasmus Shalihaxwe Namibia will host the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifier in Windhoek from 31 August to 6 September 2025. Cricket Namibia announced on Monday that the tournament will feature eight countries competing for two spots at the Global Qualifier for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Chief executive officer Johan Muller said the event marks a milestone for women’s cricket in the region.  “Namibia is pleased to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier and to welcome seven international teams to our new home of cricket. This event is not only about qualification but also about celebrating the incredible rise of women’s cricket in Africa. We hope all participants enjoy the competition and the warm hospitality our country is known for,” he said. The tournament will be played at the new FNB Namibia Cricket Ground and the HP Cricket Oval, both of which are set to co-host World Cup matches. Participating countries include hosts Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Rwanda. Rwanda and Sierra Leone already secured their qualification in July after finishing first and second at the ICC Africa Division Two qualifier in Botswana but will still take part in the Windhoek event. Namibia will aim to use home advantage, while Zimbabwe and Uganda enter as the higher-ranked teams. Fixtures are expected to be tightly contested, with emerging African nations determined to prove themselves. Meanwhile, Cricket Namibia also confirmed the men’s squad to tour Canada from 27 August to 6 September 2025. The FNB Eagles will be led by head coach Craig Williams, assisted by Justin Kemp and Evert Laubscher. The travelling squad includes captain Gerhard Erasmus, Nicol Loftie-Eaton, Bernard Scholtz, Zane Green, Ruben Trumpelmann, JJ Smith, Jan Frylinck, JP Kotze, WP Myburg, Malan Kruger, Jack Brassell, Ben Shikongo, JC Balt, Dylan Leicher, Tangeni Lungameni, and Jan-Izak De Villiers.

Region 5 Games preparations are on track Erasmus Shalihaxwe Namibia is ready to host the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games, scheduled for 4 July 2025 in Windhoek and Swakopmund.  This was confirmed by Ndeulipula Hamutumwa, chairperson of the local organising committee. Speaking on Wednesday, Hamutumwa said Namibia accepted the task on short notice after Mozambique withdrew.  He said preparations are going well and the country is on track to deliver a successful event. He said major upgrades have been made to the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium and the University of Namibia (Unam) in Windhoek, as well as the Vineta Stadium in Swakopmund.  These renovations are meant to ensure good conditions for the athletes. “A key highlight of the pre-Games activities has been the highly successful local torch tour, which has captivated communities across the nation. The tour commenced with a coastal tour to Swakopmund in the Erongo Region on Saturday, the 21st of June 2025, igniting enthusiasm among residents. It then proceeded to the northern parts of Namibia, where it was warmly received by the Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Omusati, and Kunene Regions in Oshakati on Monday, June 23, 2025,” he said. He said the torch then travelled on 25 June to Rundu, Zambezi, Otjozondjupa, and the two Kavango regions. Residents were able to see the games’ mascot, Rhino, and meet top Namibian athletes from those areas.  The torch was then taken to Gobabis in the Omaheke Region, and it will be in Keetmanshoop on 27 June before arriving in Windhoek on 29 June. “The torch relay has featured inspiring participation from former Region 5 athletes, including both able-bodied and para-athletes, celebrating the spirit of sport and unity. During the torch tour, officials have consistently expressed their excitement and confidence. This sentiment was echoed by the Omaheke Regional Councillor in Gobabis,” he said. “Everything is going according to plan. We are confident in delivering a truly exceptional event for all participating nations. We are calling upon Namibians to come in huge numbers and cheer both local and international athletes as they test their prowess against each other in a sporting spirit. These kids will make friends for life during these games; hence, we must support them,” said Hamutumwa. He said the Region 5 Youth Games will be a celebration of sport, culture, and unity.  Namibia is ready to welcome athletes and officials from across the Southern Africa Development Community region and to show its ability to host a major international sporting event.

Connie Ferguson coming to Namibia South African actress, filmmaker, producer and businesswoman Connie Ferguson is coming to Namibia to headline the FNB Namibia, City of Windhoek Business Summit Namibia 2025. The summit will be held on 5 July at a local hotel in Windhoek, where the award-winning actress will share her powerful journey of resilience, business growth and trailblazing success. Martin Nankela, the founder and executive director of The Business Summit Namibia says the event is the country’s premier platform for entrepreneurs, professionals and aspiring business leaders. Nankela says Ferguson is headlining the event because she embodies what it means to build an authentic African brand with global impact. “As an actress, entrepreneur, and founder of Ferguson Films, her journey speaks to resilience, excellence and vision. In Namibia, she will deliver a keynote address, sharing insights into building a successful enterprise in Africa’s creative economy. Her presence is not just symbolic – it’s catalytic. She brings wisdom and practical lessons that can empower local entrepreneurs to dream and build bigger,” Nankela says. He says while the summit is proudly rooted in Namibia, it reflects the broader African narrative of self-reliance, excellence and possibility. Nankela says having Ferguson at the event reaffirms that greatness is achievable when vision meets execution. He adds that the 2025 edition will feature keynote addresses, high-impact panel discussions, industry masterclasses on funding and networking sessions. The event is a half-day experience designed to inspire bold thinking, equip attendees with practical tools and foster meaningful connections. “The core aim is to equip, connect and inspire individuals to become confident builders of businesses, brands, and opportunities. We want to move Namibia from a mindset of survival to one of significance – where innovation, collaboration, and bold thinking drive our development,” Nankela says. He says the summit is open to everyone – from students and aspiring entrepreneurs to professionals, established business owners, creatives and decision-makers to attend. “Whether you’re building a business, leading in your career or seeking direction, the summit gives you tools, clarity and connections to elevate your journey. The conversations, insights, and people in the room have the power to shift your thinking and your future,” Nankela states, adding that the summit is a platform to provide Namibians with exposure, education, and inspiration to create, grow, and scale their ideas and businesses. Belinda Nangolo, a supporter, says she will attend the event and hopes to get new inspiration and meet new friends that will help better her life. She says she has been a fan of Ferguson since she was a teenager. The post Connie Ferguson coming to Namibia appeared first on The Namibian.

CoW gears up for AUSC Region 5 Youth Games Erasmus Shalihaxwe The City of Windhoek (CoW) is preparing to host the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in July 2025, with organisers ensuring that all stadiums and training venues will be ready in time for the event. Ndeulipulua Hamutumwa, Chairperson of the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games Organising Committee, said on Wednesday that Namibia is on track with preparations to welcome more than 2,500 athletes and officials from 10 countries. The games will take place from 4 to 13 July 2025. Participating countries include Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Athletes will compete in 13 sporting disciplines, including athletics, basketball, boxing, e-sports, football, judo, karate, netball, Special Olympics, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. Hamutumwa acknowledged the challenges that come with hosting a multi-sport event within a limited preparation period but said significant progress has been made. “Our facility renovations are well underway, as we are ensuring that each venue meets the highest international standards. From stadiums to training facilities, our teams are working tirelessly to complete the necessary upgrades. I want to assure you that all key venues will be ready to welcome athletes and spectators when the Games begin,” he said. He added that clear timelines have been set for the completion of renovations, with inspections scheduled before the opening ceremony. “I am pleased to confirm that the University of Namibia will serve as the Games Village, providing a safe and comfortable environment for all participating teams. Despite the date change, our organising team has efficiently managed the adjustments to ensure that all arrangements remain on track. Security remains a top priority, and we will be working closely with law enforcement agencies to create a safe and well-coordinated environment for athletes, officials, and spectators,” Hamutumwa said.
