MG8 managed a lodgement in the first line of defense. It wasn’t enough. The day before the war diary of the #afrikakorps whinged about a lack of details on maps. Insinuating this was the fault of the Italians. I consider that unlikely and rather think they never requested this information.

The war diary of the #Afrikakorps is rather disingenuous about the initial defeat, calling it a mere 'reconnaissance'. That was bull however. The attack was undertaken by all of MG8 and all available tanks of PR5. It failed in brutal artillery fire, minefields and anti-tank fire.

The focus on taking Mechili, much to the to the not particularly well hidden chagrin of the Ia of the #afrikakorps, cost the Axis the opportunity to take the crucial objective of Tobruk on the hoof. The Axis forces couldn't cash the cheque that Rommel had written in defiance of his orders.

The previous day, Ariete armoured division had been subordinated to the #afrikakorps, and another parade had been held in Tripoli. While the German forces were still very weak, their presence was milked for propaganda purposes for what it was worth and then some.
