Statement Regarding Clotilda’s Mistaken Identity from Local News Story on November 1, 2023 [Alabama Historical Commission] The recent news story regarding the Clotilda being seen above water is inaccurate and the wreck visible in the video footage is in fact another historic wreck that the Alabama Historical Commission (AHC) has documented and identified as the Lake Ellijay. The Lake Ellijay is a steel-hulled steamer built in World War I and was left in Mobile for scrapping and can be seen in the video footage shared online.

Archives to Host Food For Thought Lunchtime Lecture on Thursday, April 20 at 12:00 pm [Alabama Department of Archives and History] During this presentation, Ott will explore how family played a key role in encouraging Alabamians to support the Confederate cause during the Civil War. Going to war meant protecting loved ones from outsiders who threatened to turn the world upside down. Ott will discuss how many Alabamians initially viewed the Confederacy as a “family” and the state as a paternal figure who promised to protect loyal dependents throughout the conflict. As the war ravaged Alabama, the construct of a familial structure that once created a sense of loyalty became a source of power to question the war and challenge state leadership.
