Textbooks start #WorldWarII with Germany's invasion of Poland despite the attacks on China & Albania coming earlier. The Italian #Fascist army launched its #InvasionOfAlbania on #ThisDayInHistory in 1939, conquering the small country in five days with up to #Albanians 700 killed.
I was reading about the #Arbëreshë people, #Albanians who had immigrated to Italy centuries ago, and came across some notable individuals. One of them is Gabriella Cilmi, her song Sweet About Me” was on repeat in 2008. ☺️

ANOTHER puzzling item on Trump’s list of conflicts he has "solved"
#Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, NINE YEARS ago after #NATO launched a bombing campaign against #Serbian forces responsible for a BRUTAL crackdown against ethnic #Albanians in #Kosovo.

Puhiza Shemsedini wrote a powerful recounting of reconciliation workshops that you should read!
It's chilling how OSCE handled reconciliation efforts for civilian survivors of the Kosovo war.
If such a group attempted both siding the Holocaust people would be outraged.

By 1925, most of the #Albanians in greater Boston claimed ownership of over 300 grocery and fruit stores
The large population of #Albanians who settled in Massachusetts, found work in the American Optical Company of Southbridge, and the textile mills of New Bedford
#Albanians in the US are primarily Orthodox Christians, #Roman Catholics, or Muslims.
Most of the early #Albanians to immigrate to the US were illiterate. It was estimated that of the 5000 #Albanians in the US in 1906, only 20 could read or write their own language. By 1919, 15,000 of the 40,000 #Albanians in the US were literate
Prior to 1920 most #Albanians who migrated to the United States were young males who either migrated for economic gain or were seeking political asylum and did not to remain in the US permanently.
Groups of #Albanians in the Midwestern USA, may have assimilated more quickly. A 1935 newspaper reported that they were not “clannish” but associated freely with other nationalities
Settlements of #Albanians can be found in Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, Detroit, New Orleans, Miami, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC
Prior to 1920 most of the #Albanians who migrated to the United States were Orthodox Tosks from the city of Korce, in southern Albania
Prior to 1920, #Albanians who migrated to the US lived in community barracks or konaks, where they could live inexpensively, and send money home. These settlements gradually gave way to more permanent family dwellings as more women & children joined #Albanian men in the US
The 1990 census revealed that the largest number of #Albanians lived in New York City, followed by Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Ohio, and Pennsylvania

After the fall of communism, #Albanians began entering the United States in increasing numbers between 1990 and 1991
Many #Albanians (between 20,000-30,000) who fled Albania for political reasons, returned to Albania between 1919, and 1925, many of whom would return to the US intending to stay permanently.

#Albanians are the most recent group of Europeans to immigrate to the United States, and numbers have remained small.
The problem is not #Albanians. The problem is a society that never faced its own past; that to this day clings to a narrative of victimhood while refusing responsibility for the crimes #Serbia has committed across the region.
It is not only absurd but also sad to witness how some protesters in #Serbia resort to “šiptari,” the ethnic slur for #Albanians, as an insult against Serbian gendarmerie or Vučić’s hooligans.
