In 1860, for a charity sale intended for a nursery for poor children in Guernsey, Adèle Hugo asked Alphonse de Lamartine, Alexandre Dumas, George Sand, and her husband to give her their inkwell, their quill, and a handwritten note. Victor Hugo had a four-drawer box made to store them, then bought it a placed it on a Louis XIII table in the Blue Room at Hauteville House. In 1903, Paul Meurice had it fixed to the current table, decorated with four chimeras
