As editor of The Black Women's Health Book: Speaking for Ourselves, White was the driving force that sought out, edited, and published its stories. As one review described it, the book covers, “the vast spectrum of the black women's health experience as patient, healer and wit- ness.” White was also the author of the bio- graphy Alice Walker: A Life – a project that took 12 years of research and writing.
