Was going to do a little work today but after mistyping stuff in several emails (like “shure” for “sure”) I think I need to allow another day to recover before going back to the editing

There's still time to register for the @indexerscanada.bsky.social conference, Sorting It Out! It's happening online and recordings will be available to ticket holders for 12 months afterward. I massively enjoyed the 2025 conference and will be attending again! #indexing #AmIndexing
Starting off the week with a new book. Early March was linguistic anthropology and Malaysia, today its economic anthropology and the Middle East. #AmIndexing #AcademicSky
Currently reading this while sick but also gearing myself up for another hour of work before resting again
#AmIndexing
Ugh I hate being sick
And OF COURSE this is when a long-delayed project shows up, while I have the attention span of a gnat
#AmIndexing
Currently #AmIndexing a book relevant to this
I have to admit this was what pushed me to abandon Adobe Reader entirely, even though it had been a cornerstone of my work process
MY WHOLE JOB IS BASED ON CLOSE-READING TEXTS

The author has moved on to b. Avodah Zara 4b, in which the rabbis discuss why God might be snippy at the start of the day, as all the gentiles are waking up and committing idolatry with the sun.
I love rabbinics.

It's very windy out, but we are so damn cozy. #Coworkers
The pros of indexing a highly technical but repetitive manuscript: being able to mass batch entries across whole chapters or even the whole manuscript
Cons: keeping track of which intersecting and overlapping categories I have and haven’t done

#AmIndexing with Pip trying to sleep on my forearms.
This is easily the most technical work I’ve indexed
I’m enjoying it, though!

Recalling what a deeply human process it is to create a truly useful book index — not replicable by any automated or AI system, as it requires a theory of mind, a deep understanding of the audience & their likely needs, preferred search-terms, and points of confusion.

My brain hurts, hopefully this will do the trick. #AmIndexing #IndexSky
It’s really gratifying to see a client citing a book you also indexed

Let’s just say that reading about Mexico’s engagement with outer space is relatively soothing right now

I’m going to try to get as much work done on my new project as I can ahead of time
I’m on a short schedule so I’m going to have to pace myself

I've finally put my practice index for Humblewood up on my website. The book does have an official index but it's only one page long. I wanted to expand on it a bit to make the book easier to navigate for players.

Contact forms are frustrating when you’re not asking a standard question
Plus they’re so ungraceful

Sending out query emails today. Even though I know it’s a really low-stakes ask for the publisher (I’m simply asking to be added to a resource list of freelance indexers if there is one) it’s still giving me anxious flashbacks to the days of academic job searching

Yep
“Isn’t it just using “Find”?”
No. Let me give you the example of the three dudes with identical names, various titles, and several nicknames to disabuse you of that notion

Wow do I feel this
Honestly, a not insignificant part of why I appreciate my freelance work is that I get to learn about something new with every project

Hi, I’m an indexer
You can tell because there isn’t a single media trope about my profession
#AmIndexing
Well, I guess I’m taking @hopkinspress.bsky.social off the list of publishers I was planning to approach about being added to their indexer list
If they’re doing this to authors I doubt they’ll give indexers the opportunity to opt out their content
#AmIndexing
Yep, I think we’re switching to the wireless mouse, because this is ridiculous and distracting. #amindexing
Thank you no thank you, current laptop, for deciding that your trackpad will stick and select everything in sight as I try to read this document I #amindexing. Grrr.
I just realized I was allotted twice as many pages for this index than I thought!
Other indexers will understand why I am thrilled!
