Growing out of thick, mycelium-covered fir tree duff, a young Amanita muscaria stands in perfect light. This young mushroom hasn't fully developed. The cap is still connected to the stipe. The bulbous, egg-like base of the mushroom is white and light yellow and roughly textured. A small thin strip of the white stipe, which will likely grow to be six to ten inches tall, is visible. The cap, which has a large hole in the front, is spherical, bright red, and still mostly covered in off-white and slightly yellow spiky bumps. 📷 Canon R5 Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM M, f/5.6, 1/2, ISO 400 Stack of 27 images 9/2/24 Northern Oregon Coast
Something, likely a slug, munched this Amanita muscaria, leaving a hole in its growing cap. Clearly the springtails saw an opportunity to take advantage of the slug's leftovers
