In 19th-century Louisiana, Black women in state prisons were often locked in cells with men - with no separation by gender. Many became pregnant behind bars under brutal and dehumanizing conditions. But the horror didn't end there.

In 1848, Louisiana passed a law declaring that all children born to incarcerated Black women were property of the state. These babies were forced to stay in prison with their mothers until they turned ten years old.

At ten, these children were auctioned off by the state - sold like property. The government treated them as assets, not lives. Families were torn apart in a system designed to profit from Black suffering.

The profits from these child auctions were used to fund public schools for white children. In other words, Black children were sold to financially support institutions that Black people were barred from accessing.
