The ammonite shown is about 6.35 cm in diameter. Considerable rainbow-like nacreous material remains on the exterior of the fossil.

A fossil of a scaphitoid ammonite. The shell is brown against the lighter brown / red of the ironstone in which it's embedded. It curls around the stone, with more of the matric taking up the middle portion of the coiled ammonite shell.
This week’s Fossil Friday was found by Hope Johnston award winner and longtime APS member Harvey Negrich. This is a Late Cretaceous scaphitoid ammonite embedded in ironstone from southern Alberta!
APS 1984.03; scale bar is 1cm.
