What would happen if you took a full-sky picture every day at noon from San Francisco for a year? I have no idea! It’s too cloudy here. So I simulated it. #astronomy #analemma
This morning was the latest #Sunrise (annually though!).
Because Earth is nearer the Sun in the winter, its #orbit around the #Sun actually speeds up more than in summer & shown in the largest loop on this #analemma diagram.
This pattern is seen if photographing the Sun's position every day.

I can’t think of a picture of mine that fits the #Summer theme all that well, so I think I’ll post a relevant xkcd instead: xkcd.com/2792/
If you don’t get it and you research it, you’ll surely have a lot of fun investigating the #EquationOfTime, #Analemma, and so on. Enjoy!
A stunning image showcasing an analemma, a figure-8 curve tracing the sun's position at the same time each day throughout a year. 26 exposures taken in Northern New Jersey during 2006, digitally combined to show the sun's apparent movement against a backdrop of autumnal trees. The top and bottom points of the 8 represent the solstices.

A split image showing two analemmas: one on the left taken from Earth, and one on the right taken from Mars by the Opportunity rover. The Earth analemma appears as a symmetric figure-8 shape in the sky, while the Martian analemma appears teardrop-shaped due to Mars’ more eccentric orbit. Both are created by stacking multiple images of the Sun taken at the same time of day over the course of a year. The ground below shows a fixed foreground landscape for reference.
📸 Two Worlds, Two Analemmas
Earth and Mars both trace solar analemmas — but one forms a figure-8, the other a teardrop.

A captivating image showcasing the analemma, a figure-eight pattern tracing the Sun's apparent yearly path across the sky. Captured from Stephenville, Texas, between March 10, 2024, and March 1, 2025, the image also includes a stunning depiction of the solar corona during a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. The solstices and equinoxes are clearly marked, making it an educational and visually stunning representation of celestial motion.

Unas 50 imágenes han dado lugar a este fenómeno tan singular, una curva en forma de infinito que representa la posición aparente del Sol en el cielo a la misma hora del día durante un año completo, al observar desde un mismo lugar en la Tierra

The reason for this phenomenon is due to Earth’s quicker speed in the weeks before and after we reach perihelion to the sun - about two weeks after the solstice.

Photograph in which multiple images have been merged to show the changing position of the Sun at the same local time over the course of a year. Elongated figure-8 of solar images stretches above a building with flagpoles in front. Taken between 1998 and 1998 at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ.
