The iconography of Actaeon is known, a hunter who according to legend had the misfortune of discovering the goddess Artemis entertaining with her own nymphs and she transformed him into a deer as punishment; later the dogs of Actaeon, not recognizing him, killed him by assaulting after a long flight.
In this fresco found in the house of Menander in Pompeii, we see a partial version of it, the moment in which the dogs attack Actaeon. Here, evidently, Cretan hounds are depicted, the ancestors of all Mediterranean hounds.
I dedicated a chapter to the Cretan hounds on 'ORIGINS - In search of ancient dog breeds' in which I tell the origins of this breed.
I also wrote about these dogs in ROMA CANES MUNDI, the second volume of ORIGINS, talking about their diffusion in the Roman age.
Both books are online in electronic and paperback format; in English and Italian. ORIGINS is also in Spanish, French and Russian.
