Imagine being in the Mayan era, a fascinating period that is largely unknown to most people. This extraordinary civilization coexisted with various types of dogs, each with unique and specific characteristics. If you think I am talking to you about those dogs depicted in the statuettes of Colima (Mexico), disproportionately fat, you are wrong. In this post, I will not talk about them. One of the most interesting dogs of this period is the Tlalchichi, a very small dog with chondrodysplastic legs. The legs of this dog were shorter than the body, a characteristic that made it unique. The oldest findings of this dog date back to the end of the second millennium BC, a time when the ancestors of the Mayans had just begun their evolution towards a complex society. Unfortunately, the Tlalchichi became extinct when the Spanish arrived in America, bringing with them a piece of canine history that we will never be able to fully recover. 1
The actual appearance of this dog, in good health, was the one depicted in the pictures accompanying this post. I will discuss this in more detail in my next book, “Migrations,” which will be released in early 2025. This book will explore the history of dog and human migrations between Siberia and the Americas, offering a detailed and fascinating overview of how these extraordinary creatures have accompanied man in his explorations and adventures. 2
