For many, they weren’t so lucky. It's no surprise that during the Famine, Liverpool had the largest workhouse in the world. Thousands of Irish families were forced here, enduring institutionalised hardship. It was a site of immense suffering on an industrial scale.

Conditions in Liverpool were no better, sometimes were worse. Lace Street was notoriously cited as the most densely populated street in the UK. Families were often packed into damp, dark cellar dwellings.
Housing has been cleared away now in the post-war slum clearance

After the trauma of the crossing, the struggle turned to finding a place to exist. This is Price Street in Birkenhead, this was one of the earliest hubs for Irish settlement in Liverpool. Conditions were brutal. #AnGortaMor #Liverpool
The Pilotage Building at the Pier Head. This building stands as a monument to Liverpool's maritime history and the millions who have passed through on the way to the new world.

This is Clarence Dock. This was the gateway to hope. Between 1845 and 1852, this was the specific landing stage where the steamships from Ireland arrived. 1.3 million people stepped off the boats here.

What Made the Irish Famine So Deadly?
The Great Hunger was a modern event, shaped by the belief that the poor are the authors of their own misery and that the market must be obeyed at all costs
