I nod, trying to look dignified for these stunning, noble, exalted-looking people from another planet, and for one blissful moment, I almost succeed. And then a loud, indignant MRP breaks the silence. I freeze, the merfolk blink in unison, and Fenn’s shoulders shake as he stifles a laugh. Poof — my little, white furball of a familiar — shuffles on top of my backpack with all the grace of a very offended queen. Then, with superior intent, she stands up on my shoulders, tail puffed out like a long dandelion gone rogue, and lets out another pointed chirp. “Ahh. Sorry.” I reach up to pet the uncouth creature, earning a smug purr for my efforts. Drama queen. I clear my throat and turn back to Kael and the others with as much composure as I can scrape together. “This is Poof,” I say, gesturing awkwardly to the floofy feline now making herself comfortable atop my backpack. “She’s my loyal companion. Also a fantastic judge of character. So, uh, congratulations. She hasn’t hissed at you yet.” Kael regards Poof with a blend of curiosity and amusement, his almond-shaped black eyes sparkling. “A noble guardian,” he declares, inclining his head toward her as though she were some ancient being of great importance. Poof tilts her head in response, gives a dainty mew, and then curls up lazily on top of my pack like she owns the place. “Yeah, don’t let the cuteness fool you,” Fenn pipes up, grinning as he scratches his furry chin. “I haven't known her for long, but already before we came here, I saw her shred a plant like it was a scratching post.” Poof flattens her ears at him. I roll my eyes with a lopsided smile. “That plant was looking suspicious. And she’s harmless. Mostly.”
