Existential Amber ( poem by Stephen Spanoudis) in a roadside shop in puerto plata in the dominican republic there is a tiny museum filled with small objects made from amber jewelry & intricate keepsakes & curious tchotchkes all created painstakingly from little lumps of translucent fossilized tree sap the prize exhibit is a chess set with all of the board squares plus all of the playing pieces laboriously cut & finely polished just imagine the millennia it took for the amber to form & the millennia it laid lonely beneath a mountain or forest floor & then the human effort of finding it & collecting it & carving it into a beautiful game . . . that no one plays it sits in a glass case on a pedestal for tourists to take pictures of but it is never used i wonder if it feels its own isolation its own uselessness eternally longing for some other existence some actual physical utility or whether it is content to be merely a curiosity
