The spikes pertruding from their backside are called cornicles. When threatened they help disperse a defensive liquid, which is pushed through and secreted from the end of tip.
These garden pest get about a few millimeter in size, with colonies made up of varying stages along their life cycle; ranging from nymphs to adults.
