They are primarily nocturnal and can be found in trees or dens they make inside hollow logs or rocky crevices; these spiky rodents are herbivores and have a pretty baseline diet, consisting of bark, berries and plant matter.

These opportunistic scavengers are not consider true crab, in the sense that they’re have a soft abdomens; resulting in their need to seek out shelter in the shells of sea snails. This differs from the traditional crab, born soft growing to form a flat harden carapace for protection.

This healthy chunker has since moved in from this plant, to enter its final stage of evolution. This little fella is most likely in the fourth or fifth stage of its life-cycle; which is when their appetites really start to show. Two to three of this crawly critters can defoliate a milkweed plant in a couple of days. That’s bad news for younglings or other species that thrive off the plant, such as Milkweed Tussock Moths.

The spikes pertruding from their backside are called cornicles. When threatened they help disperse a defensive liquid, which is pushed through and secreted from the end of tip.

These garden pest get about a few millimeter in size, with colonies made up of varying stages along their life cycle; ranging from nymphs to adults.
