Corpus Christi Water Crisis Spurs Stampede on South Texas Aquifers JIM WELLS COUNTY, Texas—Dwindling levels in this region’s main reservoirs have triggered a rush on local aquifers as cities, towns, chemical plants and ranchers drill for water. The nearby city of Corpus Christi faces a looming catastrophe from the imminent depletion of water supplies that sustain 500,000 people and one of Texas’s main industrial complexes. Recent emergency groundwater projects have pushed off the timeline to disaster by months, officials said last week. But locals fear they may threaten the water supplies of rural towns and residents who have historically relied on their own small wells. “People like me are probably gonna be running out of water,” said Bruce Mumme, a retired chemical plant worker who lives on family land in rural Jim Wells County, about 40 miles outside Corpus Christi. “Then this property and house is useless.” Dust covers the fields where hay for Mumme’s cattle should grow. His catfish are about to die as the last of their pond evaporates. Sand dunes have started to form. He’s roamed this land since he was a boy and he’s never seen sand dunes. “Without water we can’t even live out here,” he said as he drove dirt roads of the land...

A water solution for drought-prone South Africa: we designed systems to replenish aquifers simply and cheaply in five towns South Africa is the 30th driest country in the world. Over 400 towns, especially in the western and central parts of the country, rely on water from aquifers that they pump out of the ground (groundwater). In 2018 an intense drought occurred in the Northern Cape province. Both dams and groundwater sources were depleted. Some towns, like Sutherland, passed “Day Zero” (the day water runs out) in 2021. To manage the crisis, the local authorities began water-shedding (shutting the water off except for a few scheduled hours daily). But this is not a lasting solution as climate observations show that rain is falling later than expected every year, and is not replenishing groundwater enough. Read more: Giant freshwater aquifer in southern Africa is under threat from mining In these dry areas, there is the possibility of another solution: managed aquifer recharge. This works by channelling surplus surface water into specially constructed basins, ponds or ditches. This water slowly seeps through the soil to recharge the aquifer. Water can also be pumped in. We are groundwater scientists who study aquifers. In a recent paper, we discussed how managed aquifer recharge had refilled groundwater in the rural Karoo towns of Carnarvon, Vanwyksvlei,...

North Kona's Primary Aquifer Provides Plenty Of Water - For Now - Honolulu Civil Beat More than 14 million gallons of water is pumped from North Kona’s Keauhou aquifer every day on average. And even with water use increasing 19% over the past decade as the region’s population grows, there’s room to pump more, state data shows. Developers are eager to tap into the resource and build new wells as others urge caution and call for tighter restrictions. Concerns are growing over environmental degradation and declining rainfall amid a changing climate. The state Commission on Water Resource Management is playing referee, implementing an adaptive management plan for the aquifer to better inform groundwater permitting and pumping decisions and improve monitoring. Daily pumpage is still well below the aquifer’s sustainable yield, the maximum rate at which water can be withdrawn without impairing the utility or quality of the source. The state has determined that 38 million gallons can be pumped per day from the Keauhou aquifer, with current usage at just 37% of the sustainable yield. Hawaiʻi County’s Department of Water Supply is allowed to use 61% of the permitted water withdrawal from Keauhou aquifer. That’s the maximum amount of water a well owner can use but does not mean they’re using all that’s allowed. Most...

The strong impact of aquifer exploitation: groundwater extraction shifted the Earth's axis by almost a meter The massive extraction of groundwater between 1993 and 2010 modified the planet’s rotation, according to a recent study. In particular, more than 2,150 gigatons were pumped, an amount equivalent to adding 6 millimeters to the global sea level. This precisely...
