Göbekli Tepe was built not by farmers in a settled civilization, but by hunter-gatherers, something previously thought impossible for a project of this scale.
German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt began uncovering the site in 1994, revealing massive T-shaped limestone pillars arranged in circles. Some of these stones stand over 18 feet tall and weigh up to 50 tons.
These pillars are covered in detailed carvings of animals like foxes, lions, snakes, and birds, suggesting it was place of great ritual and spiritual importance. 🗿
This discovery challenges the long-held belief that agriculture came before complex society and monumental architecture. Göbekli Tepe suggests it may have been the other way around.
The need to build this massive temple complex may have pushed people to work together, settle down, and domesticate plants and animals to feed the workforce.
To this day, only about 10% of the site has been excavated, meaning countless more secrets are likely still buried beneath the earth.

In modern-day Turkey sits a discovery that rewrites what we know about the ancient world, a site built 6,000 years before Stonehenge was even conceived. 🤯
This site is called Göbekli Tepe, and it dates back to around 9500 BC.
