I've tripled my vegetable garden space this year. Gonna hand water as per usual, but geeeeeez I wish I had the money to do a proper drip system.

Did Plantation Irrigation Ditches Make North Shore Floods Worse? Sugar and pineapple acreage was sold off over the years, divided into hundreds of smaller plots for farming and housing. After the deluge, everyone is pointing fingers. Sarah Ghio leans on the rear bumper of her dead silver SUV, taking a sip of juice to wet her chapped lips. It’s her sole alternative since she returned to her flood-stricken North Shore Oʻahu farm, where tap water remained unsafe to drink. You can see the exhaustion in her face, hear it in her voice. Ghio lives off the grid on leased land once owned by Dole Food’s sister company Castle and Cooke, a small piece of more than 300 acres still framed by the pineapple plantation’s century-plus-old irrigation ditches. Invasive weeds have, over time, strangled that ditch system, which merges with natural streams to carry water through farm fields and out to the ocean. If the Kona low storms of recent weeks are any indication, they’re no longer up to the job. For years the region’s waterways have been neglected. Waialua farmers and residents say that while last weekend’s historic rainfall was not avoidable, the extent of the damage was. They blame the culverts, ditches, bridges and overgrowth that became dams...

Smart irrigation tool saves water without cutting crop yields A new irrigation app for olive orchards cut water use by 11 percent without reducing either fruit or oil yields, according to a new study. The finding points to a rare kind of agricultural advance: a simpler, weekly decision can conserve scarce water without asking small growers to gamble on the harvest. Irrigation app in a test orchard The results emerged from a commercial olive orchard in eastern Spain during the 2023 growing season, where the new app guided irrigation across a full harvest cycle. Working with the Valencian Institute of Agricultural Research (IVIA), Luis Bonet Perez de Leon translated soil readings into phone-based advice and showed that the lighter schedule held the trees within a safe water range. Over the season, the orchard received 3.9 inches (99 millimeters) of irrigation, about 0.5 inches (12.7 millileters) less than a technician-managed comparison, without sacrificing production. What made that reduction notable was not only the water saved, but the fact that the system reached it through guidance simple enough to merit a closer look. Math simplified by irrigation tool Each recommendation started with the previous week’s irrigation dose, not a blank slate or a complicated crop calendar. The application then adjusted that...

Hot weather: Bukit Merah Dam Critical for Irrigation Level 1 IPOH: The current status of the Bukit Merah Dam is at the Critical Irrigation Level 1 level, which is 6.965 metres (m) compared to the alert level of 7.62 m. The Kerian District Irrigation and Drainage Department on its Facebook page announced that the irrigation supply reserve for the dam was 18.6958 million cubic metres as of yesterday. “Farmers are advised to always use water prudently and economically,” the statement said. The normal level for the standard operating procedure (SOP) for irrigation supply is 8.69 m. — NAMED

Oregon farmers, water managers stare at a bleak summer as irrigation season begins At 80 years old, Gary Harris is proud to call himself the oldest farmer in Jefferson County. A second-generation farmer, he’s seen a lot change, even more so in recent years. The beginning of April usually marks the time of year where he and other neighbors in his irrigation district will begin taking water from the Deschutes River system and diverting it through canals to water the thousands of acres of farms and ranches that blanket Central Oregon’s high desert. But over the last eight years, constant droughts and federal conservation rules that require the irrigation district to release water for endangered species habitat have left growers with less water for the growing season. Now, Harris in Central Oregon, as well as farmers across a broad stretch of the state, are facing a season that could be even drier. With already widespread drought and low snowpack levels, some fields will have to go fallow in Southern Oregon. Some farmers may have to get water elsewhere in the central region of the state. And while in far Eastern Oregon the outlook is slightly less bleak – farmers there worry next year could bring more pain. Harris figures he’ll have to write...

Sudan farmers face deepening irrigation crisis as Iran war drives up fuel prices In happier times, Mohamed Ahmed grows sorghum, lentils and beans on three feddans of land in Gezira state. But for more than a year, no irrigation water has reached the 1.2 hectares (3 acres) he cultivates in the Managil section of Sudan’s vast Gezira irrigation scheme. He spends his time clearing weeds, repairing field boundaries and preparing the soil in case water returns. The canals have been dry since May 2024. “I waited for the water as I always did,” the 38-year-old tells Mongabay by phone, “but nothing came. Two full seasons were lost. I even considered leaving farming and searching for work abroad.” Ahmed is one of as many as 4,000 farmers in the Managil section who face ruin. The Gezira Scheme spans nearly 890,000 hectares (2.2 million acres), pumping water from the Nile to farmers through a network of canals fed by the century-old Sennar Dam. According to irrigation engineer Abdullah Al-Haj, until 2005, the project’s administrators regulated water levels and flow and coordinated maintenance of the of the main pumps and canals. However, in 2005, operation of the irrigation scheme was partially privatised. New legislation — and a 2014 amendment — emphasised administrative and financial independence, granting...

Sustainable irrigation is nexus thinking in action | CGIAR System Irrigation is expanding in many countries in response to climate change and rising food demands. While in the past, most irrigation expansion was for large-scale systems supported by governments and multilateral agencies, the major investors today are farmers who purchase their own technologies and use groundwater as the water source. While there are rewards to reap, without a systemic view of the trade-offs this irrigation boom can also challenge environmental sustainability and equity. Importantly, the interlinkages are subtly different everywhere, so there’s a need to share learning between countries, but also to recognize and study the local context. A set of tools is emerging to reach that systemic yet local view of irrigation that can help ensure sustainability of our water resources. They were explored in a panel of 10 experts at the 2026 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture, titled Sustainable Irrigation Requires a Water-Energy-Food-Environment (WEFE) Nexus Approach. These tools also underline that after 15 years of WEFE Nexus thinking, the nexus approach is much more than an abstract concept. “What it would be good to hear during this panel is success stories which are scalable.” That was the opening challenge issued by Leonard Mizzi, Advisor on Food Systems...
