Co-design of diversified sorghum-based cropping systems with smallholder farmers in North-Sudanian Burkina Faso - Agronomy for Sustainable Development Farmers in the North-Sudanian zone of Burkina Faso face significant soil fertility challenges, which hinder crop productivity. Co-design approaches are increasingly employed to address cropping system performance by involving farmers in adapting their cropping systems. However, farmers’ usual cropping systems are often overlooked, despite their potential for improvement. This study addressed this shortcoming by integrating a quantitative agronomic assessment with farmers’ qualitative evaluation in a co-design process. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically compare farmers’ usual systems, research team-proposed systems, and re-designed systems incorporating farmers’ adaptations. Using the Describe, Explain, Explore, Design approach, farmers participated in the co-design of sorghum-based cropping systems from 2021 to 2023. Three annual cycles of the co-design process were conducted, each involving a demonstration, evaluation, and re-design phase. On-farm trials tested research-proposed, farmers’ usual, and re-designed systems. Farmers evaluated the systems performance through ranking and multicriteria scoring. Results revealed that research team–proposed systems did not consistently outperform farmers’ usual cropping systems in terms of average grain yield. However, re-designed systems achieved significant yield increases for sorghum and cowpea in 2023. Farmers’ ranking of the systems did not always align with yield performance, as they also considered other factors, such as labor requirements and adaptability. The row intercropping systems proposed by the research team was evaluated more favorably than farmers’ usual intercropping system as the latter is more labor demanding. Conversely, the farmers’ usual rotational system was preferred over the rotation systems proposed by the research team as the latter integrated legumes that are not used for human consumption. The study underscores the importance of labor demand for farmers. We conclude that incorporating farmers’ usual cropping systems into co-design, while considering farmers’ context, effectively addresses constraints and supports transformation toward sustainability, resilience, and improved livelihoods.

Agroecology and natural farming could accelerate inclusive economic growth in India During a convention organized by the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), international experts endorsed the significant efforts to boost agroecological and natural farming approaches in India. NITI Aayog highlighted the transformation and renewal of agriculture in India, addressing agroecology and natural farming as an alternative that can ease the excessive and wasteful use of water, prevent farmer indebtedness, contribute to mitigating greenhouse gases supporting farmer incomes and their ability to adapt to climate change...

Evidence on the multidimensional performance of agroecology in Mali using TAPE Agroecology has gained significant attention for its potential to foster sustainable food systems, but consistent, multidimensional data on its performance has often been lacking—particularly in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa. To address this, FAO and its partners developed the Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE), designed to generate harmonized global evidence on the contributions of agroecology to economic, social, and environmental sustainability. In 2020, TAPE was applied to 233 farms in the Kayes region of Mali, producing valuable insights into the stages of agroecological transition and their associated benefits. The study revealed that farms more advanced in adopting agroecological practices achieved higher performance across all sustainability dimensions. These farms produced more output with fewer external inputs, showed improved soil health, greater biodiversity, and a stronger presence of natural vegetation and pollinators. Socially, these farms were characterized by increased youth engagement, reduced emigration trends, and higher family employment in agricultural activities. Additionally, dietary diversity and food self-sufficiency were notably higher. This assessment underscores the importance of agroecology in enhancing resilience and sustainability in local food systems, particularly in regions where conventional agriculture often leads to resource depletion and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The findings from Kayes aim to inform policies and programs that support...

From ‘sustainable’ to ‘regenerative’ agriculture: What’s in a name? Regenerative agriculture began as a grassroots movement led by farmers. It has been described in many different ways, but a common thread is a set of values.

"Ethics might be the one thing that agricultural science has been missing but needs the most". Great line from this thoughtful piece on cooptation of #regenerative farming and the links between real regenerative and #agroecology theconversation.com/from-sustain...
