Tree Hay: A Forgotten Fodder. Tree hay is made by cutting or breaking leafy limbs from deciduous trees and shrubs, then drying and storing the foliage as winter feed for animals. The practice predates meadow haymaking and has been used for over 3,000 years. Deep-rooted trees can produce nutrient-rich leaves in dry periods, some with medicinal benefits. — Ted Green
