Archerfish are small tropical fish that spit jets of water to knock insects as high as 10 feet above the surface so they can eat them. Their mouths are described by biologists as being like tiny guns, and their aim is highly accurate, their brains taking refraction through the water surface into account when targeting prey, and is considered an example of animals using tools. Juveniles hunt in groups to learn how to aim better, but adults almost never miss the first shot. They're also a popular, though challenging, aquarium pet.

Our findings suggest that early-stage visual processing in archerfish is specialized for efficient object categorization. This study contributes to understanding how different brains process visual information across species. #Neuroscience #Vision #archerfish. (4/4)
Banded Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix). This unassuming 20cm-long fish has two fascinating skills: Firepower and ability to solve light refraction. Basically archerfishes uses its tongue, its palate, and one quick closing of its operculum to shoot water upwards, knocking any small animals above the water surface off their perch for the fish to eat. But shooting something through different medium poses an issue: Refraction. Young archerfishes gather together to practice target shooting, and they learn how to calculate the right angle to compensate for light refraction. In controlled environment, archerfish can be trained to hit moving targets with >50% accuracy rate. If target shooting failed, however, they can always resort to jumping. They're practical like that.
I remember the first time I learned about archerfish back when I was 3. It was truly fascinating as to how they solve the issue of wave refraction. Still fascinating today.

The Banded Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) at @elrioymar are great characters, mirrored gangs of them constantly bombing around the mangroves behind the beach, apparently in a great hurry, slicing close by my face from time to time to observe the large intruder. #Archerfish 2/18

#Archerfish prove they can count by spitting at computer screens. Previous research suggested that fish have an innate sense of numbers, but critics say these experiments aren't the final word. Now, a new study has shown that archerfish really can count.
