It's #ArchiveTechnology, 1850s style! Writing from Boston in 1858, Thomas Doane lays out the double rail system and its claims to superiority. #Archive30 #railroad

Without #archivetechnology we wouldn't have this snap of Lister on his sledge, outside GRI in 1867 contemplating all things antisepsis - cows, sewage, cholera, carbolic acid & how to persuade the non believers that he is definitely onto something...😜

Here is some technology from 1946, the Geiger counter, discovered in an old cupboard is circled in yellow ☢️
I do wonder if it’s the one mentioned or a later one 🧐

It only seems like 5 minutes ago that we were saving work on floppy disks, and now computers don’t even have CD drives anymore! A big part of #DigitalPreservation is transferring data from obsolete storage so it can still be accessed in the future.

Much modern medical equipment is mass-produced, single-use, and disposable. But historically if staff needed pieces of equipment the Royal London Hospital had a workshop for making and adapting medical tools onsite as seen in this photo from the 1950s

The #Archive30 theme today is #ArchiveTechnology and we have the lesser spotted video floppy disk. Video floppy disks were introduced in the early 1980s and were developed by Sony. They were primarily used for still images that were stored as still frames of videos but there was a later data variant

Today's #Archive30 is #ArchiveTechnology - but technology is not always modern. There ws a mill at Mathern near Chepstiw in C12 - we know this because its tithes belonged to Chepstow Priory and were agreed by the bishop. Llandaff Episcopal Acta at www.southwalesrecordsociety.co.uk/05.htm

💾 Many older digital carriers require hardware that is no longer being made, so we need items such as this old internal floppy drive to read the 5.25-inch disks in our collections.

❇️ We control this drive with something called a Greaseweazle adapter.

WPC Margaret Raymond became the first woman in the Met's Special Patrol Group, the 1961 predecessor of today's Territorial Support Group. Here she holds an early personal radio, nicknamed a staggery shouty for its weight & poor reception! #ArchiveTechnology #Archive30
