@christineburns I will throw in another type of governance: by young people.
Ireland's revolutionary decade (1912–23) ended with civil war, partition, & incomplete ousting of the world's biggest empire. But it also left us with a government of mostly young men, who built one of the wonders of […]

Visited the ESB
#Ardnacrusha power station site today. While interesting, it was very disappointing that no information was provided in Irish, they had no examples of old advertisements in Irish or reference to the Irish BSL logo. An entire section of history erased. Níos fearr ag teastáil ná seo.

Archival material relating to the #Ardnacrusha hydro-electric station on display at the #CIGS conference #UL yesterday, featuring photos by #Siemens-Schuckert taken during construction and #ESB archival material relating to promotion of project (sources: #GlucksmanLibrary, #UL; and #ESB #archive)
Original penstocks constructed by #Siemens-Schuckert (Berlin) that deliver Shannon waters to the turbines at Ardnacrusha (photo: M. O'Connell, 2025-07-04)
Original turbine casings constructed by #Siemens-Schuckert in original turbine building at Ardnacrusha. The turbines are still delivering 'green' electicity to the Irish electricity grid thanks to careful maintenance by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) since the turbines were initially commissioned in 1929 (photo: M. 100 y ago construction of hydro-electric power station commenced at #Ardnacrusha on river #Shannon; major engineering feat by #Siemens-Schuckert & #ESB. First electricity generated in 1929 & still going strong! Conference in #UniversityOfLimerick organised by #CIGS recalled this landmark project
On Friday 4th July it will be exactly 100 years since the Shannon hydro-electric scheme was launched by the newly independent Irish free state. The University of Limerick is organising a special event to mark the occasion which has additional salience as we again face the need for state […]
#til the "field mouse" Calliope assaulted last week was actually a Bank Vole, an invasive species accidentally imported by Siemens in 1925 when building #Ardnacrusha
If I write a story about 1920s Kerry or the electrification of Ireland those hours will be #research not #procrastination
👷♂️It was constructed by the German company Siemens-Schuckert in the 1920s and was Ireland’s first electrification project!
🤝Thank you for this wonderful gift! (2/2)

But before this, the Shannon Hydroelectric Scheme began the construction of the #Ardnacrusha Powerplant. It was and still is Ireland’s largest hydroelectric scheme. The construction had a huge impact on the social, economic and industrial development of Ireland. 🧵 8/16 🇮🇪
