'We've always said 'never again' and yet, here we are': recognising Palestine By Lauren Richardson September 22 2025 - 4:30pm Australia has formally recognised Palestine in an attempt to "build momentum" for a two-state solution, but pro-Palestinian northern Tasmanians said it's not a realistic solution. Grace Walsh spent her Saturday showing solidarity with the Global Samud Flotilla, which sailed from Tunisia to Gaza to break the blockade and deliver aid. A flotilla of six kayaks took to the Kanamaluka in Launceston, sailing under King's Bridge in a symbolic gesture of solidarity, linking Launceston's waters with those in the Middle East. The event was a collaboration between Grassroots Action Network Northern Tasmania, Launceston Kayak Tours and Launceston for Palestine. "From the Kanamaluka to the Jordan River, people are joining together to demand peace and justice," a statement from organisers said. Ms Walsh is a member of Launceston for Palestine. She is an Irish woman who met her Tasmanian-born partner, whose family survived the Holocaust, while living in Palestine. They now live in Scottsdale.
