“The diverse Art Deco style of geometric forms, modern luxury, & bold vibrant color palettes reflected the social & technological progress of the 1920s-30s. Visual artists felt its influence, as modernity impacted nearly every medium. Among these artists was the Long Island-based F. Edwin Church….
Esteemed for his portraits of women that reflected the growing Euro-American interest in Japanese art, he painted a variety of subject matter, including luxurious portraits, displaying versatility in technique. He captured beaming skin tones & ornately textured fabrics, captivating the viewer with dramatic compositions.
Throughout the late 1910s-30s, Church painted various women in verdant Japanese-inspired settings.

In his Girl in Yellow, c.1920, a slender woman with short dark hair confidently poses in a bright yellow dress that elegantly flows & stands out to the viewer in a composition inspired by the Japanese master Hiroshige.”

Lady in Charlotte's Dress, 1928, is quintessentially Art Deco, with the bob-haired subject's graceful draped red dress evoking a sense of refined beauty.”
