digital scan of a page from a design book, with multicolor illustrations of a striding ostrich (left) and perching white cockatoo (right) each framed in a rectangular shape

"Hisui Sosaku Zuanshu is a collection of creative designs by graphic designer SUGIURA Hisui (1876-1965), who was a pioneer of modern design in Japan."

"This is a collection of designs created by graphic designer Hisui Sugiura. It was published in 1926 (Taisho 15) after his studies in Europe. Hisui's design collections, including 'Hisui Flower and Bird Designs' which is listed in the NDL Image Bank, went out of print after the Great Kanto Earthquake. This collection was created to supplement those collections, with Sugiura gradually drawing and accumulating designs. It features new motifs that reflect the results of his studies in Europe, such as bold diagonal lines and compositions that place figures within straight lines."

"This painting depicts two swans gliding gracefully across a moonlit lake, their mirrored reflections forming two heart shapes—one above the water and one shimmering below. You may also notice the delicate heart-shaped lily pads floating nearby, one of them in bloom—a tender symbol of budding love. The cool palette of blues, grays, and whites evokes a sense of calm and stillness, making me feel like time has stopped. It reminds me that love can be simple, and beauty can be still."—Heidi Larson-David, Membership & Engagement Manager

Many works, including these jifoi, are deliberately carved in canoe form. They feature fruit-eating birds like the ufir (palm cockatoo as their prows or "heads," emphasizing their potent associations with headhunting.
These designs charged the ceremonial vessels' ability to maintain ongoing, living connections with ancestors in the spiritual realm.”

When describing his Over and Above series, Carter wrote, "from this strange world of fact and fancy stare back images, both real and unreal, of what perhaps we might be to others, but never to ourselves—the Somebody Else." Carter's work is often associated with magic realism, a naturalistic painterly style that includes elements of strangeness within the work's composition. While Over and Above introduces an unsettling confrontation with a large bird through direct eye contact, the white barrier simultaneously distances us from them. This uncanny interaction with a strange creature blurs the boundary between the human and the animal.”

Digital image of a serigraph, 9 Barn Owl faces peeking out of a heart-shaped opening in a red wall with straw pieces sticking out, in Harper's signature "minimal realism" style

Put a fancy lace border around these barn owls and you could send them to your sweetie on February 14. “Be mine!” you could say, “I love you with all my hearts!” Or when you’re ready to pop the question: “Let’s owlope.” And on your anniversary: “You’re still as owlluring as ever.” For Flag Day: “I pledge owllegiance.” Then there’s Cowlumbus Day and Owlection Day. And Christmas! “Owlleluia.” Oops, almost forgot Howloween. Maybe we’d better start listing them — owlphabetically.

oil painting depicting a crowded flock of 18 different hornbills

“Hunt Slonem's paintings are at once vibrant, energetic and colorful, yet also deeply spiritual and contemplative. The artist creates exotic forms with expressive and highly textural brushstrokes that are full of intense color, loosely inspired by artists of the German Expressionism movement.

As a child, Slonem first felt a connection to birds. The fascination continued into adulthood; not only does he admire the colorful animals from afar, but he also collects the exotic birds. Slonem utilizes the intense colors of the neo-expressional style that mirrors the interesting worlds in which these animals exist. He describes his work with one word, “Exotica.”

Slonem creates beautiful, surprising scenes that offer a calming joy to those who encounter it. From the very beginning, animals and the natural world, most notably birds, have been the central focus of his work. For Slonem, birds signify divinity and transcendence in their ability to leave the realm of earth and its constraints through flight. He sees the ability of birds to fly - to achieve atmospheric height - as a direct metaphor for transcendence from an earthly to a spiritual realm.”
