The children's window was commissioned by William Burges and designed by Henry Holiday, Pre-Raphaelite artist, to fill a gap in the south aisle.

It was paid for by money donated from the children of the parish.

Charred timbers from a warp-weighted loom at Bronze Age Cabezo Redondo, Spain, preserved by a fire at the settlement around 1450 cal BC #Woodensday

Rarely preserved, they provide a unique opportunity to reconstruct prehistoric weaving processes.

Tucked away in a corner at St Eustachius, Tavistock there’s a piper carved in wood.

He’s presumably a survivor from medieval or 16 century bench ends that were replaced in the 19th century.

From simple beginnings, the interior of our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, St Mary's Episcopal, Newport on Tay, has been enhanced greatly, often assisted by donations of funds or furnishings.

The are numerous examples for #WoodensDay such as the magnificent rood screen and pulpit.

With #Woodensday drawing ever to a close, let's revisit our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, the magnificent St Conans Kirk, Loch Awe.

This remarkable building is absolutely crammed full of the most exquisite wooden furnishings. Here are just a few examples! 😍

Part of a wooden panel from a trunk, with detailed relief carving of a lively scene from the Pardoner's Tale in the Canterbury Tales.
From the left, a man stands before a house, which is shown at about the same height, holding two jugs. From an open window in the house, another man is touching one of the jugs - he has just handed it over.
Three male figures are shown behind the house (and larger than it) leaping forward, with cloaks flying behind. One carries a dagger (which would be used to stab the central figure).
The background to the scene shows giant flower heads, leaves and bumpy terrain.

Gory panel from c.1410 #Woodensday trunk w scene from Canterbury Tales.
Pardoner's Tale: 3 greedy guys find treasure, have a row, 2 of them stab the other but, alas, drink wine the victim had cunningly prepared earlier.
Moral: greed is bad.
Will it appear in new London Museum 2026?

#woodensday St Mary, Clifford, Herefordshire. Early origins, but now very much the work of Ewan Christian, who restored the church in 1887-8 and rebuilt the North aisle with an arcade in oak. Much of the roof dates from c.1500, however.

He may have looked down on members of the Gilbert family of Compton and Greenway who held a manor nearby.
