If there is a better way to spend a Wednesday evening on way back from work than ride across Badbury Rings and down Roman Road lined with bluebells and wild garlic for #HillfortsWednesday I am open to suggestions… oh, and a pint in Anchor at Shapwick to crown it all

Eston Nab is a local landmark to those who live along the River Tees, in north-east England. It is the site of Bronze Age burial mounds and an Iron Age hill fort.

A drone photo of the square-shaped Shoulsbury Castle, looking north.
For #HillfortsWednesday: Shoulsbury or Shoulsbarrow Castle on Exmoor, near Brayford. Its square shape led some to believe it was Roman, but no evidence has been found to support this. There's a Bronze Age barrow in the NE corner & on the slopes to the NW a prehistoric stone setting.

Castercliff hillfort, #Lancashire. It is just a few hundred yards from the eastern outskirts of Nelson, & quite prominent, w. three concentric ramparts.

King’s Lane runs from here to Powerstock. For a distance it runs along the outer rampart, which makes for skill in reversing! #HillfortsWednesday

Well, it's on the side of a hill, and surrounded by a stone wall. Does Choirokoitia in Cyprus count for #HillfortsWednesday?

Stronghold of the Durotriges, the magnificent Cadbury Castle in east Somerset. Cleared out by the Romans in about 70CE then re fortified in 500CE. Linked by Leland to the legendary Camelot. Whatever, the views are spectacular

Berry Ring hillfort in Bradley, Staffordshire, England. A large univallate hillfort dated to the Iron Age near the village of Billington. Finds from the site have included pottery and flints dating from the Iron age as well as much later pottery dating from the medieval period. #HillfortsWednesday
One wonders what the Diggers would make of the gated community of oligarchs and millionaires now occupying St George's Hill - plus ca change, probably. Of course the 20thC development has also excluded the public from what's left of the Iron Age hillfort there, so here's a 🧵 for #HillfortsWednesday
