Durham and English Heritage are now recruiting for a fully-funded PhD on Roman Corbridge 🥳🥳🥳

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on one of our most important and understudied finds assemblages from Roman Britain. Deadline 1st June. Please share widely!

Would you like to see the oldest item in our museum collection?

This might surprise you...

Yes it's a Roman tile!

It is stamped, 'Leg VI vi', stamp of Legio VI Victrix. We think it's quite a fancy one and is likely to be from York in the 2nd Century.

The picturesque Château de Largoët (aka the Towers of Elven) is a medieval fortress in Brittany built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its 45-m tall octagonal keep is one of the highest in France. #MedievalMonday

Soutra Aisle in the Scottish Borders - all that remains of the medieval hospital and Augustinian friary of the House of the Holy Trinity. Probably founded in the 12th century, it was one of the most important medieval hospitals in Scotland. 📸 My own. #MedievalMonday #Soutra

I am off to Brittany on Tuesday, and I hope to visit one of my favourite ancient (or probably ancient) monuments. Known as 'Babouin' (the Baboon), this enigmatic carved stone of indeterminate age can be found in the woods near Trédion. #StandingStoneSunday

A large quartz streaked menhir dominates the foreground, it is wide and roughly tapered on the top. On the mowed grass in the background a shorter, similarly quartz’s, but shorter and more tapered stone stands. Behind this a tree lined horizon under pinkish blue skies.

Two quartz freckled giants from the Duloe stone circle #Cornwall taken near sunset last year in summer. Will be back to see how they look under a full moon. #StandingStoneSunday

A very ancient monolithic stands in bright sunlight in a field. The surface is pitted with crevices and holes, some of them pass right through the stone.

The Longstone of Minchinhampton is one of the nicest monoliths you could hope to meet. It also attracts many deposits and offerings from visitors. All of them very tasteful and respectful.

Known as the 'Temple of Mars' (although there is no evidence it was dedicated to that god), this Roman sanctuary at Corseul in Brittany was constructed in the first century and in use for two hundred years. Parts of its sacred cella still stand 10 metres tall. #RomanSiteSaturday

An inscription from a temple to Serapis in York, possibly built during the stay of the emperor Septimius Severus and family c.208-211 CE. The northern-most attested temple to an Egyptian god, the York temple may have also housed shrines to Isis, Harpocrates and Anubis. 🏺 #AncientBluesky #Egyptology

These city walls of Chichester are Roman, still standing and still impressive. They were built or completed in this form at the end of the C3rd AD. Whilst they’ve been maintained since, they’re essentially the same as the year they were finished. A wonderful survival.
