The Haga dolmen is a megalithic tomb. It is on the island of Orust in Bohuslän, Västra Götaland, Sweden. It was excavated in 1915 by Vilhelm Ferdinand Ekman. Among artifact were an amber necklace, a stone axe, a flint knife, and some slate jewellery, dated to the late Neolithic. #StandingStoneSunday

Photo showing an array of people and vehicles at Stonehenge, captioned "Ancient and Modern: motor cars at Stonehenge, Easter 1899"; from 'The Exeter road: the story of the west of England highway' by Charles G. Harper
An early contribution to #StandingStoneSunday and one of the great Stonehenge photos IMHO: the Automobile Club's visit on Easter Saturday 1899, "the first motorcars that have ever reached that hoary Druidical temple on the windy downs of Wilts". Note the steam charabanc, and a photobombing horse.
You guys better be prepared for my future Standing Stone Sunday posts.

A cropped version of maxmoran@bluesky.social’s picture of the inscribed stone from Castell Dwyran, with indentations on the top and left edge showing a bit of the ogham inscription circled in blue.
A drawing of the Castell Dwyran stone, originally published in Macalister’s Corpus Inscriptionum Insularum Celticarum vol. 1, but here from Mullen and Woudhuysen, eds., Languages and Communities in the Late-Roman and Post-Imperial Western Provinces, p. 30.
Lovely #StandingStoneSunday picture, this looks like a nice exhibit!
To clarify the inscriptions, the text beneath the cross is in a Latin script. The ogham inscription - an artificial Irish form of Voteporix (see work by @davidstifter.bsky.social) - is just visible around the edge of the stone.

The Stones of Stenness #Orkney taken in 2022 on a stormy winter's day.
Originally 12 stones stood here but only 4 remain. The circle is located on the edge of the isthmus between Harray and Stenness lochs by the #Neolithic village of Barnhouse.

Stood at Cwrt Dafydd farm, south of Margam, where they were found reused to form a footbridge across a stream. They are known as 'cart-wheel' crosses, and so named from the radial form of the cross head, like the wheels of a cart. 10thC.

It's not much, but I'm proud of my first step into exploring photogrammetry & heritage as a part of my @artscouncilengland.bsky.social project. Here's the tallest stone of Barbrook I stone circle. Thanks to @artfletch.bsky.social for the GIF help! skfb.ly/pHUAW #StandingStoneSunday #Derbyshire

A photo of Sueno's stone with a large scene of a battle with horsemen, archers, spearmen and swordsmen.
The other side of the stone with a large ellaborate Celtic cross with a scene at the bottom that has been interpretted as a coronation.
Sueno's Stone is a 6.5 metre tall 9th-10th century #Pictish stone near Forres, annoyingly there's a hell of a lot of different historical events that the stone could be representing.
The stone gets its name from Sweyn Forkbeard, whos association to the stone is highlt doubted.

It's #StandingStoneSunday again! Here's a section of Barbrook 1 stone circle here in the Peak District. The vast majority of circles here have modest sized stones in them. Some visitors are disappointed at this.
A stone circle in the Peak District. The sky is clear and dark. This is an infrared photo.
Nine Stones Close.
Yes, there are only 4 stones. Folklore offers an explanation. "Nine" is a corruption of "noon", said to be the time of day when fairies would gather to dance around the circle.

A revisit to this gorgeous tiny stone circle in Winterbourne, Dorset, with a diametre of 8 m. You have to walk though thick woods to get to it. #EnglishHeritage says it ‘resembles a huddle of ancient conspirators’ and I like that. Mine, 2024
