A small recumbent effigy in armour in St John the Baptist, Marldon, Devon may represent Otho ( Otes) Gilbert, died 1494. His grandson, another Otho, married Katherine Champernowne.

St. Mary’s, Berry Pomeroy. Wall monument to Rev. John Prince (1643-1723), vicar of Berry Pomeroy for over 40 years.

Author of "The Worthies of Devon" — biographies of Devon's many notable figures — probably finished in 1697.

Exeter Cathedral. The splendid tomb of Sir John Gilbert, (d1596) whose birthday is tomorrow. Beside him, his wife Elizabeth Chudleigh, at his feet a squirrel. Eldest son of Katherine Champernowne and Otho (Otes) Gilbert.

My biggest costume achievement of 2025- completing an early Tudor outfit inspired by the tomb brass of Devon woman Honor Basset, later Lady Lisle in time for a special event at Coldridge in May.

Just editing the next (and my first) volume of The Devon Historian www.devonhistorysociety.org.uk/journal/. I’m so impressed at the depth of original research from the authors, all of whom do this because they believe it matters. @devonhist.bsky.social #devon #devonhistory

Church of All Saints, East Budleigh. The tower is likely from the time of Edmund Lacy, Bishop of Exeter 1420-55.

Standing tall when I visited last week. Built to last!

Day 23

Not exactly sequels, rather a series.

Mistress of Dartington Hall, due out in July, follows Roberda and the Champernownes of Dartington through the time of the Spanish Armada, and beyond.

The 15th century tower of St Peter’s, Tiverton, Devon

Yesterday I read the will of Katherine Plantagenet Courtenay, aunt of King Henry VIII. The chapel, where she was laid to rest in 1527 stood ‘in the churche yearde’.
