A Woman’s lot — Daughter, Wife, Mother, Widow Elizabeth Champernowne c.1555 -? Wife of Sir Edward Seymour of Berry Pomeroy.

Your Sunday afternoon read — a new post on my Substack. Widows’ garb gave me an important clue. I love it when my interest in costume collides with other research.

Norman tub font at St Andrew’s , Mells, Somerset.

The Horner family bought nearby Mells Manor in 1543, after dissolution of Glastonbury Abbey in 1539.

Thomas Horner from my latest novel, born 1547, may have been baptised in this font.

I did the same thing. I read our World Book Encyclopedias and a massive dictionary for hours at a time.

Day 23 Biggest surprise from my research?

Sir Walter Raleigh’s recipe for a cordial to cure coughs — made from tobacco! Elinor Fettiplace includes it in the manuscript collection of recipes she compiled in 1604.

One thing I've realised being in central London is how much the main character from my book would hate it. He's a violinist so would have reason to be in the theatre district. Must remember the terrifying tuktuks. #AmWriting #WritersResearch

Recommend me your favourite lesbian space pirates book (preferably written by someone else so we’re uplifting each other) so I can name drop it in the novel I’m writing and hopefully someone will think, “ooh, that sounds like a cool concept” and find it.

St Mary’s Cloford, Somerset beyond the gate on Sunday afternoon. A 15th century church rebuilt 1856 — Cloford gets a mention in my next novel.

- “For,” the old man told me, “we have all got a sperrit something like a spark inside we, and a sperrit can go large or small or down down quite small, even into a snuff-box.”

I spent a useful morning studying old documents. It’s reassuring to find evidence that the plot for my work in progress is plausible.

My visit to St Peter’s Church, North Tawton, Devon was definitely worthwhile.

This medieval bench end bears the Champernowne arms

Day16 One of the most challenging aspects of the setting for my writing is looking beyond what’s there today to see places like Dartington Hall @DartingtonTrust through the eyes of its 16th century residents

Day 13 prompt is - if I could time travel where and when would I visit?

I travel back to 16th century Devon all the time! It’s a brilliant way of understanding their world

Monument to Sir Arthur Champernowne of Dartington.

Is the woman seated far left his wife Mary Norreys or his daughter Elizabeth, later wife of Edward Seymour of Berry Pomeroy?
