At #COP29, the rules for #Article6o4 (Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism) were largely finalized. But as COP30 got underway, some States, using the carbon market promoters’ own words, are trying to weaken rules to make them less aligned with science and more aligned with profit.

#COP30 is being heavily lobbied — literally — by the fossil-fuel industry. And related industry interests are putting their fingers directly into negotiations of one of the market mechanisms ( #Article6o4).

COP29 Opens With Maneuvers On Carbon Markets that Will Weaken Climate Action From the Get-Go - Center for International Environmental Law At the opening plenary of the 29th Climate Conference (COP29), States took the unprecedented decision to approve dangerous rules on carbon markets early and without due process.

👀Opening plenary at #COP29, now turning to the opening of the CMA and eyes on whether any State will step up & not allow the "standards" approved by the #Article6o4 Supervisory Body to go through without debate (hint: they should NOT).

For several years the #Article6o4 Supervisory Body has failed to impress Parties with their recommendations for removals rules under the #ParisAgreement’s carbon market mechanism. At #COP29 they were due to try again but the Supervisory Body went rogue!

⚠️ UNACCEPTABLE: The mandate to the #Article6o4 Supervisory Body was to present recommendations to Parties for their consideration. Not to say “it's done” but “please, let us know what you think of this”.

Now it may be that these are approved on Day 1, with no discussion.

The Article 6.4 mechanism has a Supervisory Body tasked with developing and supervising the requirements and processes needed to operationalize the mechanism.

#COP29 begins tomorrow in Baku 🇦🇿 & we are already seeing an attempt to weaken effective climate action.

The #Article6o4 Supervisory Body adopted dangerous standards on methodologies & removal activities – now they might be rubber-stamped without any oversight by States.
