NGC 1977, the Running Man Nebula, is a luminous patch of Orion where starlight and dust put on a color duel. In this LRGB rendition, the nebula’s cool blue glow is a classic reflection nebula signature: fine interstellar dust is scattering the intense light from nearby young stars (most notably 42 Orionis) like a cosmic fog caught in headlights. Woven through that blue are crimson H-alpha emission arcs, where energetic ultraviolet radiation is ionizing hydrogen in the surrounding H II region, causing it to fluoresce in deep red. Dark, smoky lanes and curled wisps carve through the glow, revealing denser dust clouds that both sculpt the nebula and hide parts of it from view. The starfield is sharp and lively, with bright, white-blue stars anchoring the scene while fainter pinpoints recede into the Orion backdrop, giving the whole frame that “window into a busy stellar nursery” feeling. From source in toot: In the centre an opaque cloud of grey gas hides a star. Two strong beams of light from the star emerge from large holes in both sides of the cloud. The central cloud is surrounded by concentric, wispy shells of gas, illuminated by the star’s light. The shells reflect extra light where they’re hit by the twin beams. A crowd of smaller stars with cross-shaped spikes over them surround the nebula on a black background

This image is a stunning long-exposure photograph of a famous region in the constellation Orion. Here is a breakdown of what you are seeing: Featured Celestial Objects • The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33): Located right in the center, this is the distinct, dark silhouette that looks like a knight from a chess piece. It is a dark nebula—a dense cloud of cold gas and dust that blocks the light from the glowing red emission nebula behind it. • The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024): Visible in the lower-left corner, this bright, orange-tinted feature looks like a flickering fire. The dark "cracks" within the flame are actually lanes of obscuring dust. • Alnitak: The very bright, overexposed star just above and to the left of the Flame Nebula. This is the easternmost star in Orion's Belt. Its intense ultraviolet light is what causes the surrounding gas to glow.

The Gum catalog consists of 84 emission nebulae in the southern sky and was made by astronomer Colin Stanley Gum (1924 - 1960).

Two nebulae: - the Lagoon nebula is the large one on the left. It is a swirling mass of red gas and dark dust. - the Trifid nebula the one on the right. It is small, red, round and trifurcated by sharp, dark dust clouds. There is also a blue reflection nebula to the upper right.
One of our astronomy society members took this gorgeous #astrophotograph at our dark sky site north of Peoria of the Lagoon (M-8) and Trifid (M-20) nebulae in Sagittarius. Both are 'nurseries' to new star formation.
They used a 4" refractor with a 240 minute exposure.
An omega-shaped red nebula
(2/3) The next night, I took this #astrophotograph of the Omega Nebula (M-17). Like the Pelican Nebula, it is a star-forming mass of gas and dust in the constellation Sagittarius.
