“Nyx? What’re you doing here?” he asked, keeping his voice low.
“I couldn’t take it anymore,” she said, staring directly at his chest.
“Couldn’t take what? Are you okay?” he asked, concerned. Her eyes snapped up to stare into his.
“I need you, Bronn,” she said. “I’ve put up with this for so long and I’m done. The sneaking around, the playing nice around our teammates, done with it. I need you. In me. Now.”
“Nyx, this isn’t like Atlas, a lot of these windows are open. Somebody might hear-”
“Damn the risks,” she snarled.
“I don’t even have a co-”
“Damn. The. Risks,” she repeated. She kissed him, a powerful surge of primal hunger driving her. Bronn wrapped his arms around her and she tangled her fingers in his hair, driving him back toward his bed. He sank as the backs of his knees made contact with the corner of the mattress, and she was on top of him, tearing at the leather baldric he was still wearing for some infuriating reason.
Bronn was completely unprepared for the ferocity of the fox Faunus’ assault. He’d been used to the cheery disposition, even the cold, businesslike calculation of the former White Fang assassin. This was new. This was feral.

Some time after confessing their feelings for one another, Nyx seeks out Bronn in the middle of the night, with things taking a rather steamy turn.

A fantastic and long-awaited commission from Wasabii_exe on VGen. So amused at Bronn's expression here.

Bronn was startled by porcelain shattering. He looked down at the floor; the water jug his mother had been carrying lay on the floor, smashed. He looked back up to see an expression of fear, of uncertainty, on Silvia’s face, as she stared at Emerald.

“Jade?” she asked, incredulous.

Emerald's eyes widened. "Huh? No, I'm not… how do you know my mother?" she asked.

Silvia frowned. "Your… I think you'd better come in and sit down," she said.

"We haven't got time right now," Bronn said. "Professor Theodore will want to see us. I just thought you should know that we found Nyx. Or rather, she found us."

The remainder of the trip from Coquina to Vacuo was, thankfully, quiet, and it allowed Emerald a chance to put things in perspective. Bronn was at the head of the convoy, keeping a lookout for local wildlife, which tended to be more problematic than the Grimm. Team CFVY had run afoul of mole crabs on more than one occasion, and brothers knew what else lurked out in the sands.

There was no doubting the man’s bravery, she had to admit. He wasn’t afraid to take point when danger was a possibility. Probably had something to do with the door-sized shield he carried around. He also made sure to cover the team’s retreat when they’d finished their mission or things got too hot to stick around. Selfless, brave.

Idiotic.

Why had he been so adamant, so insistent on not letting her deal with her problems on her own? He knew, they both knew, that he was far from the best Huntsman in the world. He wasn’t even the best Huntsman in Vacuo. But he had a quiet confidence that convinced him - and nearly convinced her - that he could defend her if it came to it.

It was bravado, of course; she had enough experience with men to know that much. But the way he didn’t waver, not even once, told her that unlike some other men (Mercury…), he was actually serious about his actions. He’d never failed to be kind to her, even when it got on her nerves. He’d stood up for her on several occasions, something Mercury had definitely not done.

The trucks rolled to a stop in the center of the refugee district, and Emerald saw Bronn’s booted feet hit the dirt. Within minutes, they were unloading the vehicles. Food and medical supplies went out to the civilians, Dust containers and weapons went to the Huntsmen, Huntresses, and civilian guards. Finally, when they were done, Emerald breathed a sigh of relief. The job was done.

She found Bronn sitting against a low wall, his head tilted back and his eyes closed, an arm propped up on his left knee. She sat down quietly beside him. “Glad we can finally take a break,” she said. “I don’t mind convoy duty, but being on edge all the time just makes me tired faster.”

“You’re not wrong,” Bronn said. “That’s why you gotta get catnaps where you can.” He opened his eyes and looked at her, a sloppy grin on his face.

“Lazy,” she said, rolling her eyes. “You’re gonna have to do better than that if you’re gonna keep your promise to me.”

“Oh, I can do better,” Bronn said, closing his eyes again, his head resting against the stone wall. “Conserving energy now helps me do better later.”

“If you say so,” she replied. She studied his pose, his posture. He was actually relaxed, for the first time all weekend. His shoulders weren’t bunched up under his ears, his hands weren’t balled up into fists. The illusionist reached out, slowly, tentatively, and placed her hand on top of his, barely brushing the skin at first, then grasping it. She felt his fingers tense, but they wrapped around hers. She leaned against his shoulder. “I thought about what you said this morning. About not carrying everything myself. About us being partners. And you’re right. You do have my back. You have ever since we got here. I’m not used to it. It’s weird. But… it’s not bad.”

His lip twitched as he cracked an eye open to look at her again. “Big of you to admit it,” he said.

She let go of his hand long enough to slap his knee, but then reached for it again almost subconsciously. “I still think you’re an idiot,” she continued. “But I want you to know that I do trust you. And I’ll have your back too. Even if…”

He shook his head. He didn’t need to hear what she didn’t need to say. It was enough, for now, that she trusted him. The rest would work itself out from there. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

As the last of the convoy trucks rumbled away for maintenance, Nora leaned on the edge of Magnhild’s handle and watched Emerald from a distance. “Well would you look at that,” she muttered to no one in particular.

As their dinner arrived, Emerald cleared her throat. “Hey, I uh… I wanted to apologize. For what I said earlier,” she said. “I didn't mean to imply you just wanted to sleep with me. It's just a reaction.”

“Pretty quick reaction,” Bronn answered.

“It's something I'm used to,” Emerald said. “When I worked with- Well, before Atlas, this guy made remarks like that all the time. I couldn't tell whether he was serious or just being a jerk. Also doesn't help that I never really know how to react to people in general. It's not just some heightened sense of misandry. I guess you could say I'm an equal-opportunity bitch.”

“You could say that. I'm not gonna say it. I may be a Huntsman, but I still value my life at least a little,” Bronn said. That elicited a small smile from her. He took a quick bite of bread, chewed it slowly, swallowed. “Look, thank you. I know it wasn't easy. Isn't easy. But you don't have to apologize. I'm willing to let it be water under the bridge. I'd be lying if I said there wasn't something there, but we have a job to do, a war on the horizon, and that comes first.”

Emerald nodded. “Yeah, everything’s fine. I wanted to thank you. You know, for earlier,” she said.

“You’re welcome,” he said. “For what?”

She punched him in the arm. “Saving me, jerk,” she said.

He rubbed his arm where she hit him. “You don’t have to thank me for that,” he said.

“No, really, I think I do,” she said. “Nobody else I’ve teamed up with before would’ve done that. Well, except Ruby, she might have, but she’s… different.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“How did you manage that, anyway? Like, how did you know that Nevermore was coming?” she asked.

“My Semblance,” he said. “It warned me you were in danger. I saw you being torn apart by the thing.”

Emerald shivered against him, and Bronn looked toward the window. The sky was dark, the sun having set long ago while they were distracted by the movie. Shade was a fortress, but had no protection from the desert elements, neither the heat of the day, nor the chill of the night. Bronn reached over his shoulder and tugged free the blanket pinned underneath him, draping it over the illusionist.

“I’m not cold,” she murmured.

“You’re good at illusions, but a terrible liar,” he replied. “The desert gets cold at night, we both know that.”

“Night…?” Emerald asked, her eyes blinking open. “Oh hell. I didn’t realize-“

“It’s fine,” Bronn said with a smile. “I don’t think it’s gonna make a difference if you spend the night here.”

“You sure?”

“Mostly,” Bronn answered. Since the evacuation of Atlas, Shade Academy had been largely emptied of all its students, with most of the underage ones returning to the smaller combat academies from which they’d been promoted. A handful of older students had been graduated early, and the school had been given over to housing for licensed Huntsmen like Bronn. Civilians weren’t permitted, though, so Emerald technically wasn’t supposed to be there, but she’d snuck in anyway.

“I don’t want to cause any trouble, I can just go,” Emerald said, sitting up.

“You’re choosing now to not cause trouble?” Bronn asked, amusement in his tone.

“Shut up, you know what I mean,” she answered.

“Really, it’s fine. It’s not like anybody’s going to come in here to check on me,” Bronn said. “You can stay the night. I want you to stay the night. You’ll be more comfortable here than in the refugee camp anyway.”

The mint-haired woman frowned. “I still don't know if it's a good idea…” she began.

“Please don't go?” Bronn asked. The plaintiveness of his tone surprised her. “This past week has been a train wreck, both figuratively and literally. I'd like to try and have one normal, peaceful evening.”

“Peaceful?” she asked, masking her disbelief with playfulness. “Don't think I've ever heard that used to describe me before.”
