She smiled sadly. “I love you, Bronn,” she repeated. “I know you don’t think the same of me; you thought I was dead for weeks, but even before then you were kind of oblivious to everything else. You had to be the shield for all of us.”

“Not a very good shield,” he said, frowning. “Cobalt and Rouge still died. Plenty of people in Mantle did.”

“None of which was your fault, nor could you have prevented it,” Nyx said, cutting him off. “Pretending to be pathetic isn’t going to make me stop loving you, but it will annoy me to no end.”

He sighed. “I know. I’m sorry. I need time to process all this,” he said. “The world needs to stop ending for, like, five minutes. But…”

“But…?” Nyx asked, somewhat expectantly.

“I do appreciate you coming clean,” Bronn answered. “About all of it. I can’t tell you how I’m feeling right now, not until I get it all sorted out, but I do at least want to thank you for being honest.”

Nyx drops a series of heavy confessions on Bronn all at once, and Bronn struggles to come to terms with all of it.

“Nyx? What’re you doing here?” he asked, keeping his voice low.
“I couldn’t take it anymore,” she said, staring directly at his chest.
“Couldn’t take what? Are you okay?” he asked, concerned. Her eyes snapped up to stare into his.
“I need you, Bronn,” she said. “I’ve put up with this for so long and I’m done. The sneaking around, the playing nice around our teammates, done with it. I need you. In me. Now.”
“Nyx, this isn’t like Atlas, a lot of these windows are open. Somebody might hear-”
“Damn the risks,” she snarled.
“I don’t even have a co-”
“Damn. The. Risks,” she repeated. She kissed him, a powerful surge of primal hunger driving her. Bronn wrapped his arms around her and she tangled her fingers in his hair, driving him back toward his bed. He sank as the backs of his knees made contact with the corner of the mattress, and she was on top of him, tearing at the leather baldric he was still wearing for some infuriating reason.
Bronn was completely unprepared for the ferocity of the fox Faunus’ assault. He’d been used to the cheery disposition, even the cold, businesslike calculation of the former White Fang assassin. This was new. This was feral.

Some time after confessing their feelings for one another, Nyx seeks out Bronn in the middle of the night, with things taking a rather steamy turn.

A fantastic and long-awaited commission from Wasabii_exe on VGen. So amused at Bronn's expression here.

The sea air was crisp and refreshing as Nyx led Bronn along the coast. Bronn's cloak flapped in the wind as they walked. "You know, you could've left that behind," she said. "There's not anybody out here who's going to care."
Bronn shrugged. "It's not really a big deal to me," he said. "Besides, it'll come in handy."
"What do you mean?" she asked, stopping to look at him.
He grinned, then shucked off the cloak. "Neither of us remembered to bring a beach towel," he said, laying the outside of the cloak on the sand.
"Not bad," Nyx replied, smiling appreciatively. She slowly lowered herself to the ground, and Bronn sat next to her.
"Sometimes, I have good ideas," he said.
Nyx slipped off her sandals and buried her toes in the sand. She leaned her head on Bronn's shoulder and took a deep breath of the sea breeze. "Yeah, you do," she said. "I haven't been able to relax like this in a long time."
Bronn sighed. "You're right. We don't get breaks anymore. Not for a long time. Maybe, if we win this war…"
"You know how to point out the cloud in a silver lining," Nyx said, rolling her eyes.
"Force of habit," Bronn said. "Maybe I do need a vacation."

A pair of absolutely fantastic commissions I've gotten back the last couple of days. First, a pencil sketch of Bronn by @st.arlight.shines on Instagram, which shows the fatigue he feels after fighting so many hopeless battles.

Bronn was startled by porcelain shattering. He looked down at the floor; the water jug his mother had been carrying lay on the floor, smashed. He looked back up to see an expression of fear, of uncertainty, on Silvia’s face, as she stared at Emerald.

“Jade?” she asked, incredulous.

Emerald's eyes widened. "Huh? No, I'm not… how do you know my mother?" she asked.

Silvia frowned. "Your… I think you'd better come in and sit down," she said.

"We haven't got time right now," Bronn said. "Professor Theodore will want to see us. I just thought you should know that we found Nyx. Or rather, she found us."

“I’m not gonna lie, what Emerald did hurt. Never thought I’d have her messing with my mind like that. But she did help me realize one thing. I thought I lost you once before, when Atlas fell. I can’t stand the idea of losing you again,” Bronn said. “I love you, Nyx.”

The fox Faunus’ eyes snapped up, her expression one of disbelief. Surely she hadn’t heard him right. “Say it again,” she whispered.

“What?” Bronn asked, straining to hear her.

“Say it. Again,” she repeated.

Bronn sighed. Closed his eyes, centered himself. “I love you, Nyx.”

He barely had time to catch her as she threw her arms around him. He held her tightly, still horrified at the visions Emerald’s hallucination had shown him, but convinced that here, now, was real. “Don’t disappear on me again, okay?”

She buried her face in his neck and smiled. “I promise.”

Bronn’s Semblance usually prepared him for disaster. He called it Calamity Zero for a reason. It was supposed to keep him, or others around him, from mortal danger. It had served him well in training, in combat.

It had not even come close to preparing him for her.

Nyx grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and, with a strength belying her frame, shoved him against the wall. He felt her lips press against his, with a passion and fervor that made him question everything - or would have, if he could think straight. Finally, she released him, and he stared at her in disbelief. “Wha-? What was that about?” he eventually managed to splutter.

“I wasn’t lying when I told you I loved you,” Nyx said. “I know it makes things complicated and I’m sorry, but after everything that’s happened I don’t think I can just let you go.”

“Nyx, I-”

“Stop. I don’t need a discussion. I don’t need an apology or pity from you,” she said. “I’m going to earn you, fair and square.” She leaned in and kissed him on the ear, then whispered, “Well, maybe not that fair.” A moment later, she vanished, activating her Semblance and escaping to safety.

“No, listen,” Nyx said, her eyes welling with tears. “Because I have to tell you the truth - the whole truth.

“You know I was born in Hinoki, in the forest. I went to Sanctum for combat training before going to Atlas. But while I was at Sanctum, I was approached by a group of Faunus. They were part of the White Fang, and wanted my help with slipping into Atlas,” she said. “It’s the entire reason I went there instead of Haven. At first, I was alright with it. I knew about the treatment most Faunus received at the hands of humans. I was a victim of it myself. That cheery girl you knew? She was just a mask. A fake personality that was supposed to lure people into a false sense of security,” she said.

Bronn’s grip tightened on the hilt of his axe, but he didn’t draw it. He was determined to listen to Nyx, to give her the chance to explain herself. He owed her that much, at least. “Tell me you weren’t behind the security breaches that led to Atlas falling,” he said quietly.

“I wasn’t. I promise I wasn’t. I was already long done with the White Fang by then. When Adam Taurus killed Sienna Khan and took over, I vanished,” she said. “But even before that, I was starting to feel uneasy about what they were doing. It started off with protests and simple things, but they started getting aggressive. Hijacking trains, robbing stores, burning down houses. At first I understood, because humans were evil and violent and abused us. But then I went to Atlas. I got put into your team. You… you changed everything, Bronn. You were… you are a good man. A good human. You never once made me feel different. You protected me when nobody else would. And all the lies that the White Fang were trying to spin started to unravel.

“I loved you for that. I still love you.”

That bombshell hit Bronn out of nowhere. It left him dumbfounded. “Nyx, I- You what?”

She smiled sadly. “I love you, Bronn,” she repeated. “I know you don’t think the same of me; you thought I was dead for months, but even before then you were kind of oblivious to everything else. You had to be the shield for all of us.”

The streets were empty at this hour, an unusual quiet having fallen over the city in the past few weeks. Bronn was glad for the quiet - the political atmosphere was heating up ahead of the Atlas Council election, and supplies that were supposed to be headed for Mantle were being diverted… elsewhere. Emotions were running high, which meant the Grimm were sure to close in more often.

Bronn let out a deep breath, watching the steam escape his lips and dissipate in the night air. Above, the underside of Atlas eclipsed the shattered moon and obscured the stars. The streetlamps were dim as their Dust was rationed. The shieldbearer struggled to see. He thought he saw dust stirring at the mouth of an alleyway, but by the time he approached it, he didn’t see anything.

He blinked, and in that instant, the air shifted, a hooded figure popping into existence. Bronn gasped, then realized belatedly how utterly unprepared he was. Fortunately, the figure wasn’t a threat; Nyx lowered her hood and smiled sweetly at him. “Easy there, Bronn,” she said.

“I know, I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself,” she said. “Thanks for coming out here.”

“No problem. Everything okay?” he asked. “Harriett still giving you trouble?”

Nyx rolled her eyes, her ears flattening slightly. “No, it’s fine. She gives everybody trouble,” she replied. “Have you heard anything about the supply convoys? The ones being diverted away from Mantle?”

Bronn shook his head. “Above my paygrade, Nyx, you know that,” he answered. “It’s supposedly being looked into, but I don’t know if I trust Ironwood any further than I can throw him. Probably nobody can, especially after the embargo.”

Nyx frowned. “You’re probably right. How’s your mom doing? Is the business okay?”

He nodded. “The shop is still running out of necessity, since they provide armor for Huntsmen. Costs have gone up, though, and the wait for materials is frustrating.”

“Well, if there’s anything I can do…”

“I appreciate it, Nyx,” Bronn said. “We’ll be okay.” The fox Faunus dropped her gaze, then looked back up at him, her cheeks slightly pink. Bronn assumed it was the cold. “You should get back inside and warm up.”

“Hmm? Oh, I’m fine,” she said. “Rouge is out right now anyway, so there’s nobody home. Besides, we haven’t gotten to see much of each other lately.”

“That’s true,” Bronn said. Their missions of late had been pretty thin, with Ironwood preferring to leave patrols to the mechanized infantry rather than the Huntsmen. Even the private missions seemed to have dried up - Bronn hadn’t seen many come across, and Rouge and Cobalt confirmed similar difficulties.

“Hey, so while I’ve got you here, there was something I needed to tell you,” she said, lowering her voice.

She reengaged her Semblance, vanishing from sight as she hurried off, leaving Bronn very confused and slightly shaken.

The remainder of the trip from Coquina to Vacuo was, thankfully, quiet, and it allowed Emerald a chance to put things in perspective. Bronn was at the head of the convoy, keeping a lookout for local wildlife, which tended to be more problematic than the Grimm. Team CFVY had run afoul of mole crabs on more than one occasion, and brothers knew what else lurked out in the sands.

There was no doubting the man’s bravery, she had to admit. He wasn’t afraid to take point when danger was a possibility. Probably had something to do with the door-sized shield he carried around. He also made sure to cover the team’s retreat when they’d finished their mission or things got too hot to stick around. Selfless, brave.

Idiotic.

Why had he been so adamant, so insistent on not letting her deal with her problems on her own? He knew, they both knew, that he was far from the best Huntsman in the world. He wasn’t even the best Huntsman in Vacuo. But he had a quiet confidence that convinced him - and nearly convinced her - that he could defend her if it came to it.

It was bravado, of course; she had enough experience with men to know that much. But the way he didn’t waver, not even once, told her that unlike some other men (Mercury…), he was actually serious about his actions. He’d never failed to be kind to her, even when it got on her nerves. He’d stood up for her on several occasions, something Mercury had definitely not done.

The trucks rolled to a stop in the center of the refugee district, and Emerald saw Bronn’s booted feet hit the dirt. Within minutes, they were unloading the vehicles. Food and medical supplies went out to the civilians, Dust containers and weapons went to the Huntsmen, Huntresses, and civilian guards. Finally, when they were done, Emerald breathed a sigh of relief. The job was done.

She found Bronn sitting against a low wall, his head tilted back and his eyes closed, an arm propped up on his left knee. She sat down quietly beside him. “Glad we can finally take a break,” she said. “I don’t mind convoy duty, but being on edge all the time just makes me tired faster.”

“You’re not wrong,” Bronn said. “That’s why you gotta get catnaps where you can.” He opened his eyes and looked at her, a sloppy grin on his face.

“Lazy,” she said, rolling her eyes. “You’re gonna have to do better than that if you’re gonna keep your promise to me.”

It was bravado, of course; she had enough experience with men to know that much. But the way he didn’t waver, not even once, told her that unlike some other men (Mercury…), he was actually serious about his actions. “Oh, I can do better,” Bronn said, closing his eyes again, his head resting against the stone wall. “Conserving energy now helps me do better later.”

“If you say so,” she replied. She studied his pose, his posture. He was actually relaxed, for the first time all weekend. His shoulders weren’t bunched up under his ears, his hands weren’t balled up into fists. The illusionist reached out, slowly, tentatively, and placed her hand on top of his, barely brushing the skin at first, then grasping it. She felt his fingers tense, but they wrapped around hers. She leaned against his shoulder. “I thought about what you said this morning. About not carrying everything myself. About us being partners. And you’re right. You do have my back. You have ever since we got here. I’m not used to it. It’s weird. But… it’s not bad.”

His lip twitched as he cracked an eye open to look at her again. “Big of you to admit it,” he said.

She let go of his hand long enough to slap his knee, but then reached for it again almost subconsciously. “I still think you’re an idiot,” she continued. “But I want you to know that I do trust you. And I’ll have your back too. Even if…”

He shook his head. He didn’t need to hear what she didn’t need to say. It was enough, for now, that she trusted him. The rest would work itself out from there. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

As the last of the convoy trucks rumbled away for maintenance, Nora leaned on the edge of Magnhild’s handle and watched Emerald from a distance. “Well would you look at that,” she muttered to no one in particular.

“Are you going to keep avoiding me when we get back to Vacuo?” Bronn asked, frowning.

“I’m not avoiding you,” Emerald said.

“You haven’t spoken to me all day. Not since you ran off last night and I couldn’t find you,” he pointed out.

“I’m not avoiding you,” she repeated. “I’m avoiding… that.”

“What? The conversation? You don’t want to talk about what happened last night?”

“No, not really,” she said. “You should just pretend it didn’t happen.”

“I don’t know if I can,” Bronn said. “I definitely don’t want to.”

“Well, you should,” Emerald said. “It shouldn’t have happened. I shouldn’t have done that to you.”

“Why not?”

“Because of who I am. Because of the enemies I have,” she answered.

Bronn barked a laugh. “The superhero cliché? That’s your defense?” he asked.

She rounded on him, mere centimeters away from his nose. “Listen to me, Bronn, and listen very well,” she said, injecting venom into her tone. “I am a traitor. I worked for Cinder Fall, and then for Salem, and helped them destroy Beacon Academy. I turned my back on them when it became apparent that Salem wanted to destroy the entire world, but before that, I was just fine being the bad guy. I was a thief, a street rat, and when Cinder took me in I became a gun for hire. If she finds out I’ve turned against them, she’ll kill me, and anybody close to me, in the most excruciating way possible. And Salem will do worse. Just ask your Faunus friend.”

Bronn forced himself to ignore the jab about Nyx, studied her face for a few moments, until she began to back away slowly. “You’re not telling me anything I didn’t already know,” he said. “I get it. You did some really messed up stuff before you got here. So because of that, what, you think you deserve to be punished? That you have to be miserable and alone the rest of your life?”

“What do you mean you already-”

“Nora and Ren told me about you when we first got settled into Vacuo. So did that Oscar kid, who is somehow even older than he looks,” Bronn said. “Cinder, Amber, the Vytal Festival, all of it. They also told me you nearly got yourself killed breaking Oscar out of Salem’s prison. And how messed up you were seeing all those kids huddled in Atlas’ subway, not knowing if they were going to live or die in the next few hours.”

Bronn watched the effect his words had on her, the slow realization that he already knew most of her worst secrets. But here he was, talking to her like a friend, an equal, instead of arresting her and throwing her in jail. Not judging, not threatening, just empathizing. “You think you’re the only one who hates themselves?” he asked. “After Atlas, after I ended up being the only one left alive on my team, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hated me more than me. Hell, even before that. You don’t get to hold the monopoly on self-loathing just because you screwed up. Most of what you did, you did to survive.

“Now as for what you did last night…”

“Please forget it,” Emerald said, her eyes uncertain. “It didn’t mean anything. It shouldn’t have happened.”

“You’re a great thief, but a terrible liar,” Bronn said. “You’re trying to protect me again, but I didn’t sign up to be a Huntsman to play it safe.”

"Hey, yeah, can we get two of those?" Bronn asked. The woman running the stall nodded and slid two bowls of ramen across to them. Named a figure.

"Sounds good. Emerald, pay the woman," he said.

"Me? Why me? I thought this was a date?" she asked.

"It is, but you stole my wallet," he replied with a smirk.

She stuck her tongue out at him playfully. "How long have you known?" she asked.

"Pretty much from the instant you lifted it out of my pocket," he said.

“I must be slipping, then,” Emerald said, producing his wallet. “I used to be able to pick pockets without anyone feeling it.”

Bronn took his wallet with a smile. “I’m not saying you’re not good, you were very subtle. I was just expecting a little more feeling. Maybe I should rethink which pocket I put this in,” he said.

“Keep buying me dinner and you might not have to.” She took her bowl and sauntered away, knowing he was watching her hips.

He shook his head and grabbed his own ramen, following her to a table.

The streetlamps glowed to life, casting soft shadows on the market square in the center of Coquina. “Surprisingly quiet tonight,” Bronn noted. “Of course, that’s probably from being on the downside of an adrenaline spike after being ambushed earlier.”

“Anybody ever mention you talk too much?” Emerald asked. The sly smile on her lips kept her remark from being a rebuke, though.

Bronn chuckled. “On occasion. Nora said you wanted to see me?” he asked. “Is everything alright?”

Emerald nodded. “Yeah, everything’s fine. I wanted to thank you. You know, for earlier,” she said.

“You’re welcome,” he said. “For what?”

She punched him in the arm. “Saving me, jerk,” she said.

“No, really, I think I do,” she said. “Nobody else I’ve teamed up with before would’ve done that. Well, except Ruby, she might have, but she’s… different.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“How did you manage that, anyway? Like, how did you know that Nevermore was coming?” she asked.

“My Semblance,” he said. “It warned me you were in danger. I saw you being torn apart by the thing.”

Emerald shivered. “So you threw yourself in harm’s way to protect a thief,” she said. “Seems logical enough.”

“We’re partners, Em,” Bronn said. “I’ve got your back. I trust you to have mine.”

“I guess…” Emerald muttered. “Anyway, that was all I really wanted to talk about. Have a good night.”

Bronn gave her a quizzical look, but decided against pressing further. “Alright. G’night,” he replied, turning to walk away.

“Wait,” she said. She grabbed his arm, spinning him around to face her again, then planted her lips on his. The kiss didn’t last long, but Bronn’s heart started racing. He was about to reach for her when she pulled away, then turned and fled.

The Huntsman stood there, in the center of the market, dumbfounded. After a moment, his brain started working again, and he shook his head. Adrenaline crash, he told himself. That’s all it was, was an adrenaline crash.

Emerald shivered against him, and Bronn looked toward the window. The sky was dark, the sun having set long ago while they were distracted by the movie. Shade was a fortress, but had no protection from the desert elements, neither the heat of the day, nor the chill of the night. Bronn reached over his shoulder and tugged free the blanket pinned underneath him, draping it over the illusionist.

“I’m not cold,” she murmured.

“You’re good at illusions, but a terrible liar,” he replied. “The desert gets cold at night, we both know that.”

“Night…?” Emerald asked, her eyes blinking open. “Oh hell. I didn’t realize-“

“It’s fine,” Bronn said with a smile. “I don’t think it’s gonna make a difference if you spend the night here.”

“You sure?”

“Mostly,” Bronn answered. Since the evacuation of Atlas, Shade Academy had been largely emptied of all its students, with most of the underage ones returning to the smaller combat academies from which they’d been promoted. A handful of older students had been graduated early, and the school had been given over to housing for licensed Huntsmen like Bronn. Civilians weren’t permitted, though, so Emerald technically wasn’t supposed to be there, but she’d snuck in anyway.

“I don’t want to cause any trouble, I can just go,” Emerald said, sitting up.

“You’re choosing now to not cause trouble?” Bronn asked, amusement in his tone.

“Shut up, you know what I mean,” she answered.

“Really, it’s fine. It’s not like anybody’s going to come in here to check on me,” Bronn said. “You can stay the night. I want you to stay the night. You’ll be more comfortable here than in the refugee camp anyway.”

The mint-haired woman frowned. “I still don't know if it's a good idea…” she began.

“Please don't go?” Bronn asked. The plaintiveness of his tone surprised her. “This past week has been a train wreck, both figuratively and literally. I'd like to try and have one normal, peaceful evening.”

“Peaceful?” she asked, masking her disbelief with playfulness. “Don't think I've ever heard that used to describe me before.”

As their dinner arrived, Emerald cleared her throat. “Hey, I uh… I wanted to apologize. For what I said earlier,” she said. “I didn't mean to imply you just wanted to sleep with me. It's just a reaction.”

“Pretty quick reaction,” Bronn answered.

“It's something I'm used to,” Emerald said. “When I worked with- Well, before Atlas, this guy made remarks like that all the time. I couldn't tell whether he was serious or just being a jerk. Also doesn't help that I never really know how to react to people in general. It's not just some heightened sense of misandry. I guess you could say I'm an equal-opportunity bitch.”

“You could say that. I'm not gonna say it. I may be a Huntsman, but I still value my life at least a little,” Bronn said. That elicited a small smile from her. “Look, thank you. I know it wasn't easy. Isn't easy. But you don't have to apologize. I'm willing to let it be water under the bridge. I'd be lying if I said there wasn't something there, but we have a job to do, a war on the horizon, and that comes first.”

“You got too attached. You got sloppy,” Cinder said. “And then you were replaced. Now you’re just a loose end.” Her eye flared, the Maiden power manifesting as a flame. Her left arm, the Grimm arm, raised up and over her shoulder, preparing to strike Emerald down where she stood.

“Emerald, watch out!” A shot rang out, and Cinder exploded into dust the color of red clay.

The mint-haired woman whirled around to see what had disrupted her illusion. Bronn stood there, rifle in hand, trying to comprehend what he’d just seen. “Bronn… how much of that did you hear?” she asked.

“What was that?” he asked in return, lowering his weapon.

“Did you hear all of it?” she pressed. He nodded. “Look, you… you have to understand…”

“No, shut up, I don’t have to understand anything,” Bronn said, shaking his head. “I heard from some of the others what happened before.”

Bronn interrupts a conversation between Emerald and what appears to be her former boss, Cinder. Really, it's just Emerald coming to terms with being used and betrayed.
